The new budget smartphones from Motorola stable are the Moto E5 and the Moto E5 Plus, and they were launched for the Indian market in New Delhi yesterday. Both smartphones are now available for sale online.
The Moto E5 was exclusively leaked by us a few months ago. The phones come as mighty contenders in the budget smartphone race, with price points that are easy on the pockets and features that are lucrative enough to keep their popularity high. The Moto E series smartphones have been quite successful, and the newer handsets in the series come as huge upgrades over the Moto E4 and the Moto E4 Plus.

Moto E5: Specifications
The Moto E5 features a 5.7-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ resolution (1440×720 pixels), a pixel density of 282ppi, 18:9 aspect ratio, and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It runs Android 8.0 Oreo with stock Android UI and custom Moto apps. The phone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor (with 1.4GHz ARM Cortex-A53 quad-core CPU and Adreno 308 GPU), 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot for storage expansion. There’s a fingerprint reader that’s hidden inside the M shaped Motorola logo on the phone’s back.
The Moto E5 features a 13MP rear-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture, 1.12µm pixels, phase-detection autofocus, and 1080p video recording. At the front, there’s a 5MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture, soft LED flash, and 1080p video recording. It’s a dual-SIM smartphone, and it compatible with 4G LTE and VoLTE networks in India. Other connectivity features include GPS/A-GPS, FM Radio, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.2, microUSB 2.0 port, and a 3.5mm headphone port. The phone has a huge, 4000mAh battery, which should easily last more than a day of heavy use (or more if it is used sparsely).
Moto E5 Plus: Specifications
The Moto E5 Plus’ IPS LCD display is an impressive 6 inches and offers HD+ resolution (1440×720 pixels). The design is bezel-less but the aspect ratio is still 18:9, and the screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. Motorola is promoting this newest member of the Moto E family as a budget smartphone with a big screen, made for entertainment and good photography. The phone also comes with a rear fingerprint sensor that is smartly hidden in the M badge that is the signature style with all Moto phones. The handset is designed differently, with a curved back and a reflective wave pattern, while all the edges are rounded by a glass panel.
The phone runs the stock version of Android 8.0 Oreo but those with a thing for customizability can download the Moto App to activate new gesture controls. The handset is powered by Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 430 processor paired to a 1.4GHz octa-core CPU. The phone comes in only one memory variant, packing 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded to 128GB. The phone’s speaker is at the front and it has dual-SIM and separate SD card slots.
The camera features on this budget smartphone are also quite commendable, with a 12MP rear camera that is supported by laser autofocus technology and LED flash. The setup on the rear side of the handset looks like it is housing two camera sensors, but that is not the case. The rear camera can capture Full HD videos at 30fps and gives a wide f/2.0 aperture, aided by phase-detection autofocus. The large 1.25μm pixels promise crisp images. The 5MP selfie camera also comes with a flash on the front, which gives the phone a definitive edge as most phones in this budget don’t offer a front flash.
The battery of the Moto E5 Plus is 5,000 mAh, which is exceptional for its price range. Motorola claims that the handset can play up to 18 hours of video at a stretch. The battery is also complemented by a 10W ‘rapid charger’ that comes with a promise of quick charging, but Motorola hasn’t specified just how quick.
