On July 11, 2018, as the social networking site, Twitter, announced a global crackdown on automated and fake accounts, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official Twitter account lost more than 3 lakh followers. The alleged account was in the username @narendramodi, which faced an acute decrease in the followers’ count.
It is also important to know that this account has the most number of followers in the country. A screenshot has been released on this regard to show that the true account of PM Modi got a decrease in the number of followers that too within a span of 24 hours. The screenshot also displayed the number of followers before and after the crackdown on the site.
According to the screenshot the total number of followers before the crackdown was 43,371,783, and after the crackdown, the number went down to 43,181,509. The decrease in the number of followers took place between 12, July 2018 and 13, July 2018. On the 12th of July, the Twitter account of PM Modi has 43.4 Million followers and on the 13th of July, the number decreased to 43.1 Million followers.
Also, it should be noted that the Twitter account of the office of Prime Minister in India, which is used under the username @PMOIndia, also seemed to lose around 1 lakh followers in the same period of time.

This piece of news spread like a forest fire, and Twitter users came with tweets mocking at the drop in the number of followers. The Twitterati was seen mocking at the current situation by quoting Swachh Twitter Abhiyan has cleared the number of followers and the result is evident starting from the Prime Minister of the country.

Twitter claimed that this step is to improve and ensure the quality of the service so that everyone can trust their followers. Further, the company also said that the move to lock accounts have been initiated after finding sudden changes in the account activities.
