Chinese buyers have only a week to wait for the new Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition now. After more than a month of anticipation and speculation, rumours can be put to rest now as there is good evidence to believe that the Chinese launch of the most popular edition of Mi 8 is here.

Mi 8 Explorer Edition: Sale Date, Price in China

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition will go on sale in China on July 24, that is next Tuesday. A leaked Xiaomi invite clearly has the sale date printed on top and also the time 10 AM, with the unique selling points of this special edition of the Mi 8 filling the space. The smartphone is sold in China since May 31 on Tuesdays only, and we had expected the Explorer Edition of the phone to launch by end of this month. Now, the invite leaked to the web and going viral is proof enough that come next Tuesday, and Chinese buyers can grab their Explorer Edition for Chinese Yuan 3,699 each. The price is substantially higher than the 128GB variant of the standard Xiaomi Mi 8, which was launched at a price of CNY 2,999. However, the special Explorer Edition does offer that much extra for the additional amount it costs.

Mi 8 Explorer Edition: Specifications, Features

The most alluring aspect of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition is the metal frame with a translucent back. While some are calling it transparent, the back cover of the smartphone appears more to be translucent in its physical properties, neither giving away the visibility of all the contents inside nor hiding all of them. The back reveals, through a black translucent panel, some high-precision components amongst the battery and the NFC coil.

Then there is the 3D face recognition feature with structured light technology, resembling the feature on the Apple iPhone X. It employs 33,000 matrix dots to detail a precise image of the user’s face, nailing down the probability of the face recognition going wrong to only one in a million attempts.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition is also Xiaomi’s first smartphone to feature a fingerprint scanner inside the screen, and Xiaomi claims to have optimised it so well that it is much faster than the standard in-screen sensors. Xiaomi has also claimed that this sensor takes much less pressure to be put on the screen for the scan, so that you would just be touching the screen with your finger and the scanner vibrates to show that it has read your fingerprints.

The Explorer Edition and the Mi 8 standard edition both come with dual-frequency GPS, which increases tracking precision to about 30 centimetres of the object, instead of the standard 5 metres.

The storage option on the Explorer Edition is fixed at 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. Which should be good enough, considering the handset is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor, which clock 2.8GHz. The display is Super AMOLED 6.21-inch, with a neat 83.8 per cent screen-to-body ratio. The screen resolution is 2248×1080 pixels, and the aspect ratio is also an impressive 18.7:9, while the display design features a notch and ultra-slim bezels.

The dual rear camera has two 12MP sensors and the front camera has a 20MP sensor, the same as the standard Mi 8. The phone will ship with a MIUI10 skin on top of the latest Android 8.1 Oreo.

Mi 8 Explorer Edition: Launch, Expected Price in India

There was a lot of speculation about the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, but we now know that the Chinese buyer has to wait only a week more for the handset to arrive. Considering that the Mi 8 itself hasn’t launched in India yet, it is likely that Xiaomi will launch the Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, and Mi 8 Explorer Edition all at the same time here, sometime by July end or in August.

The launch price of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition in China is CNY 3,699, which converted to INR is Rs 37,974 as of today.
