Consumers in China will finally be able to get their hands on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition smartphone next week. Earlier this month, a leaked Xiaomi poster had revealed that the Mi 8 Explorer Edition would go on sale for the first time in China on July 24th. However, the information turned out to be inaccurate as the smartphone did not go on sale this Tuesday. Xiaomi has now officially confirmed on Weibo that the first sale of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition will take place on the 30th of July.
Mi 8 Explorer Edition: First Sale in China Set for July 30
The Mi 8 Explorer Edition will go on sale for the first time in China on Monday, July 30 starting at 7:30 PM on Xiaomi Mall. In the near future, it is likely that the smartphone will also be sold via other major Chinese e-commerce platforms. As announced by Xiaomi at its 8th Anniversary event, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is priced at 3,699 yuan, which translates to approximately Rs.37,500 based on the current exchange rate.
Mi 8 Explorer Edition: Specifications, Features
The Mi 8 Explorer Edition is similar to the standard Mi 8 in many ways but does have a few key unique features that justify its higher price tag. Perhaps the most obvious difference between the two smartphones is the presence of a transparent back panel.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition comes with a 6.21-inch Super AMOLED Full screen display with 1080 x 2248 Full HD+ resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, DCI-P3 color space coverage, and a notch at the top. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition is Xiaomi’s first smartphone to come with an under-display fingerprint sensor. Under the hood, Mi 8 Explorer Edition runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core 10nm processor clocked at up to 2.8 GHz with an Adreno 630 GPU. Unlike the regular Mi 8, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is only available in a single memory configuration with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. There is no microSD card slot in the smartphone, so further expansion will not be possible.
On the back of the handset is a 12MP + 12MP dual-camera setup with 2x optical zoom and Dual Pixel PDAF. Xiaomi has paired the primary 12MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, while the secondary sensor is coupled with an f/2.4 aperture. The dual cameras come with several AI-powered features as well, just like other recent Xiaomi smartphones. When it comes to video, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is capable of capturing 4K videos at up to 60 fps. The front-facing 20MP sensor is coupled with an f/2.0 aperture and can record up to Full HD resolution videos at 30 fps. In addition to an under-display fingerprint sensor, the Mi 8 comes with 3D facial recognition as well for secure Face Unlock, similar to Face ID on the iPhone X. In fact, Xiaomi refers to the 3D facial recognition system on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition as ‘Face ID’.
Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, NFC, USB Type-C, and 4G VoLTE. The smartphone is fueled by a 3000mAh non-removable battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0+ support for fast charging. In terms of software, the smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9.5 currently.
Mi 8 Explorer Edition: Expected Price in India
Xiaomi hasn’t announced any plans of launching the Mi 8 Explorer Edition in any market outside China, there is a small chance that the company might contemplate launching the smartphone to take on the Vivo NEX and OPPO Find X smartphones in the country. If Xiaomi does bring the Mi 8 Explorer Edition to India, we can expect it to be priced at somewhere around Rs.40,000.
