Oppo F7, Vivo V9: Could These Midrange Phones Compete With Latest Entrants in Specifications, Features

The midrange smartphone market in India is on the verge of exploding the same way the budget market took off. The current two devices with the most prominent presence here are the Oppo F7 (review) and the Vivo V9 (review). There haven’t been many compelling alternatives other than these two until now. Today, let’s take a look at the top six new mid-range smartphones that have already launched or are about to launch in India, to see if they can offer better value for your money. Note that this is not a comprehensive comparison and is just a brief overview of the clear advantages and disadvantages of these phones

Nokia X6 vs Oppo F7, Vivo V9

Nokia X6 is the first phone by HMD Global to feature a notched screen. It is yet to officially arrive in India, but its price is likely to be very close to that of the Oppo F7 and Vivo V9. There are two main aspects where the Nokia X6 clearly stands out over its competition – software and performance. While both the other devices come with distracting skins on top of the OS, Nokia offers a clean stock Android 8.1 Oreo experience. This also means the X6 will receive updates faster than the other two. Furthermore, the chipset used on the Nokia X6 is the Snapdragon 636. For comparison, the Oppo F7 comes with a MediaTek Helio P60, while the Vivo V9 comes with the older Snapdragon 626.

However, there are aspects of the Nokia X6 which some might find to be a compromise. The selfie camera on this device is just a 16MP sensor while the other two devices offer 25MP and 24MP cameras respectively.

Mi A2 vs Oppo F7, Vivo V9

Xiaomi Mi A2

The Mi A2 stands as a solid contender here because of its significantly better performance. The phone is expected with a Snapdragon 660 SoC running stock Android 8.1 Oreo. The only real drawback here is that the phone misses out on the 3.5mm headphone jack and you will need a type-C converter to use wired headphones with this device.

Huawei Nova 3i vs Oppo F7, Vivo V9

The Huawei Nova 3i is currently available for pre-order in India. There is no doubt this phone looks absolutely gorgeous. This is the first phone to feature a Hisilicon Kirin 710 SoC which looks to be considerably better than its competition – at least on paper. Furthermore, the phone comes with a 24MP + 2MP selfie camera configuration with support for HDR.

Mi Max 3 vs Oppo F7, Vivo V9

Since the Mi Max 3 falls closer to the phablet category, its 6.9-inch screen might divide opinions. However, its massive 5500mAh battery clearly beats every other smartphone mid-ranged or otherwise. The phone also comes with the Snapdragon 636 SoC under the hood, and support fast charging over USB Type-C.

The one drawback this phone has is in its imaging department with a 12MP +5MP setup at the rear while a measly 8MP camera is provided at the front for selfies.

Moto G6 Plus vs Oppo F7, Vivo V9

Moto G6 Plus

The advantages of going with the Moto G6 Plus include its slightly better Snapdragon 630 CPU running close to stock Android. It also supports 15W fast charging over USB Type-C. However, this phone again gets a poorer camera setup with a 12MP + 5MP configuration at the back and an 8MP sensor at the front.

Honor Play vs Oppo F7, Vivo V9

Honor Play (1)

If the Honor Play ends up launching anywhere close to its expected price of Rs.20,000 in India, it will be the most powerful smartphone out of all mentioned here today. The phone comes powered by a flagship-grade Kirin 970. This phone also has a comparatively better battery life thanks to its 3750mAh cell which supports 18W fast charging. The only place where the phone slightly lags behind is with its selfie camera which measures 16MP.
