Samsung today launched its latest Galaxy On series smartphone, dubbed the Galaxy On8. The new Galaxy On8 isn’t entirely new, though. For the most part, the Galaxy On8 is identical to the Galaxy J8, which was launched in India alongside the Galaxy J6 in May.
Samsung Galaxy On8: Price in India, Availability
The Samsung Galaxy On8 has been priced at Rs.16,990 in India. Unlike the Galaxy J8, which is sold both online and offline, the Galaxy On8 will be available exclusively via Flipkart and Samsung Online Shop starting August 6th. Launch offers include No Cost EMI options on all major credit cards along with data offers.
Samsung Galaxy On8: Specifications, Features
The Samsung Galaxy On8 (2018) features a Super AMOLED Infinity Display measuring 6.0-inches diagonally with 720 x 1480 HD+ resolution and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Powering the Galaxy On8 (2018) is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset clocked at 1.6 GHz with an Adreno 506 GPU. When it comes to memory, the “new” Galaxy On8 from Samsung is equipped with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. For further expansion up to 256GB, the smartphone includes a dedicated microSD card slot.
In the camera department, Samsung Galaxy On8 has been equipped with a 16MP + 5MP dual-camera setup on the back with features like Live Focus, Portrait Backdrop, Portrait Dolly, Background Blur Shape, and more. While the 16MP primary sensor is coupled with an f/1.7 aperture, the secondary 5MP depth sensor is paired with an f/1.9 aperture. For selfies, the Galaxy On8 features a 16MP snapper on the front with an f/1.9 aperture and an LED flash. The 16MP camera supports face recognition as well, so you can simply look at the phone to unlock it quickly. There is also a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, positioned below the vertically-stacked dual cameras. When it comes to video, however, the Galaxy On8 can only capture Full HD videos at up to 30fps and not 4K like some of the other smartphones that are available for around the same price.
Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, FM radio, USB OTG, and 4G VoLTE. Like the rest of the handset’s specifications, the Galaxy On8 is identical to the Galaxy J8 in terms of battery capacity as well. It packs a 3500mAh non-removable battery that does not support fast charging. The smartphone measures 159.2 x 75.7 x 8.2mm and weighs in at 191 grams.
Samsung Galaxy On8: OS Updates, Software
Just like the hardware specifications, Samsung’s Galaxy On8 is identical to the Galaxy J8 in the software department as well. It will ship with the Android 8.0 Oreo-based Samsung Experience UI out of the box with some new features that we hadn’t seen on older budget Galaxy handsets. With Chat-over-video, users can use chatting apps like WhatsApp while you view videos. Thanks to a transparent keyboard, you can type a message while still being able to watch whatever is playing on the screen, eliminating the need to pause videos while you chat. That’s not the only new software feature worth talking about. The Galaxy On8 also offers a Social Camera app that makes it extremely easy for you to share your photos instantly with friends and family. With the Samsung Mall app, you can shoot any items that you like and buy something similar across various online shopping websites with the help of Samsung’s AI-powered visual search technology. As for updates, Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything regarding its plans to update the Galaxy J8 and Galaxy On8 yet but we do expect both smartphones to be updated at least to Android P sometime next year.
