The Mi A2 launches in India today, after weeks of great anticipation, as the phone packs great value in a budget pricing. The handset is a mid-range offering and comes as the successor to the Mi A1, which itself was a popular and well-received smartphone. With some features exclusive to the Indian market, the phone sure will sell hot here. In this post, we bring to your attention five reasons why this would make for a great buy if your budget is about Rs 20,000.

Mi A2: Camera

The Xiaomi Mi A2 sports a strong dual rear camera with a primary 12MP sensor and an additional 20MP sensor. Both sensors use large pixels and come with a wide f/1.75 aperture. The larger sensor on the rear uses 2.0-micrometre superpixels while the 12MP sensor gets 1.25-micrometre large pixels. This makes it the first mid-range phone ever to use superpixels of the size 2.0 µm. The rear dual camera, as well as the front 20MP shooter, come with support from artificial intelligence.

The Mi A2, according to Xiaomi executive Manu Jain, allows you to switch between the primary and secondary sensor of the dual rear camera, in case you are not happy with the automatic adjustment. The primary lens is for daylight images while the secondary 12MP sensor is for low-light conditions, but the freedom to choose between the two is a first in any smartphone in the world.

The front camera gets LED flash and HD video recording at 30 frames per second, while the rear dual camera gets dual LED flash, phase-detection autofocus, panorama shooting, and ultra slow HD video recording at 120 frames per second. The video recording is also supported by electronic image stabilization.

The front camera gets superpixels to the tune of 1.0 µm, it is equipped with Auto HDR features, which is a new improvement of the HDR mode of photography. Auto HDR takes a single colour-and-exposure adjusted image in a bright environment while the old HDR mode stitches together four different shots clicked at different exposure levels. The auto HDR is added to the rear dual camera as well.

The AI portrait selfie technology in the front camera enhances the blurred background in bokeh effect images apart from beautifying the face of the person being shot. The front camera is aided by a 4500K soft light for selfies.

Mi A2: Gorilla Glass 5 Display

The display on the Mi A2 is a solid 5.99-inch Full HD+ LCD unit, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, a new layer of protective glass that is found only on flagship models and rarely in this budget range. The display follows a tall type design and churns out 403 pixels per inch, with an 18:9 aspect ratio and slim bezels.

The phone gets an aluminium unibody with the Corning Gorilla Glass being a 2.5D curved type, and it connects to the reversible Type-C USB. During the launch, Xiaomi proudly said the phone is just 7.3 mm thick, leaner even than the OnePlus 6.

Mi A2: Android One

The Android One is a programme by Google where devices offer stock Android experience and Google provides priority updates for two years, making your Android One device not just safe and secure but well updated for two years at least. The Mi A1 was the highest selling Android One device, according to CounterPoint research, and the Mi A2 follows in the same track, with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, which, of course, will get an official Android 9 Pie OTA update very soon. For those not interested in the gimmicks offered by additional UI skins, the Android One offers a clean stock Android experience.

Mi A2: Fast processor, GPU

Apart from good software, the Xiaomi Mi A2 packs great hardware too. It is powered by a fast chipset called Qualcomm Snapdragon 660, which is an octa-core processor and features Kyro 260 architecture that makes it touch speeds of 2.2GHz. The graphics processor is also a fast Adreno 512 unit.

Mi A2: QuickCharge 4.0

The Xiaomi Mi A2 is the first phone in India to come with QuickCharge 4.0 support, which is Qualcomm’s latest and best handset charging technology. However, in the box is a Type-C USB connector that does not feature QuickCharge 4.0 hardware. For the QuickCharge 4.0 to work though, Xiaomi needs to launch a new charger as an accessory in India, since no charger supporting QuickCharge 4.0 is available in the country yet. We expect such a charger to come as an accessory for the Mi A2 soon.
