It has been raining smartphones this summer and Vivo has just added to that list. After releasing its flagships for 2018, the Vivo X21 and the Vivo Nex in India, Vivo has now announced a budget phone offering, the Vivo Y81. We had earlier reported that Vivo is planning to launch the Y81 in India soon, and now it has been made official.
Vivo Y81: Price in India
In Vietnam, the Vivo Y81 was launched at VND 4,990,000 (approx. Rs. 14,900). However, Vivo was smart enough to realize that at that price point, the Y81 will probably lose out to its rivals like the Redmi Note 5 and the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1. According to a report by 91Mobiles, Vivo has priced the smartphone at Rs 12,990 in India. Is it a good buy at that price point? Let’s go into the specifications of the phone to answer that.
Vivo Y81: Specifications, Features
The Vivo Y81 features the same design trend as seen with the recent Vivo devices. It features a premium feeling body with a notched display at the front, surrounded by minimal bezels. The display itself is a 6.22-inch IPS panel with HD+ resolution and an aspect ratio of 19:9. There’s Gorilla glass protection present on the front, and the phone also comes with Face Unlock feature.
Coming to the innards of the phone, it runs on Mediatek Helio P22 processor, and gets 3GB of RAM coupled with 32GB of storage. There’s also scope for expandable storage of up to 256GB via MicroSD card. The phone ships with Android Oreo 8.1 out of the box and runs on Vivo’s custom FunTouch OS skin on top. Powering the smartphone is a 3,260mAh battery.
Last but not the least, the Y81 comes with decent camera hardware too. On the back of the device, we have a 13MP camera with f/2.2 aperture and an LED flash. While on the front it features a 5MP selfie snapper.
Vivo Y81: Battling With Xiaomi and Honor in India
The Vivo Y81 does feel like a decent budget offering, but sadly it falls short of its competitors in more than one ways. At its price point of 12,999, the Vivo Y81 directly competes with the likes of the Redmi Note 5, the Honor 9N and the Zenfone Max Pro M1. While the Redmi Note 5 packs in a much better processor and increased RAM and storage (4GB+64GB), for 11,999; the Honor 9N and the Zenfone Max Pro M1 put up even stronger cases. Both these phones come with dual camera set up at the back which is capable of taking portrait mode photos, and the Zenfone Max Pro also packs in a massive 5000mAh battery.
The Vivo Y81 is really no match for the specifications that the Zenfone Pro Max M1 boasts of. And what’s amazing is that is priced at Rs 10,999 for its 3GB RAM + 32 GB storage model and for the price of a Vivo Y81, you’ll get the beefier 4GB RAM + 64GB version of the Zenfone Max Pro M1. Even the Honor 9N starts at Rs 11,999 and we really think the Vivo Y81 should have been priced at somewhere close to the 10,000 mark for it to have a shot at being a successful budget offering.
