Xiaomi Confirms POCO Sub-Brand for Global and Indian Markets; POCOPHONE F1 Launch Imminent?

Lead Product Manager for Xiaomi India, Jai Mani, introduced two new social media accounts that hint at the launch of the POCOPHONE F1 smartphone in India

Xiaomi has added special social media accounts dedicated to the POCOPHONE smartphone sub-brand. What’s even more interesting is the fact that one of the accounts is specifically for the Indian subcontinent. Also, the development may be interpreted as an imminent launch of the POCOPHONE F1 smartphone not just in international markets, but India as well.

The Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 flagship smartphone was recently listed for pre-order on a Belarusian online store. The smartphone with a rather quirky brand name has been spotted on several occasions. Also, these leaks have offered quite a few details about the device. The phone has leaked online through various sources such as FCC certification or Bluetooth SIG certification, but none of these sources was able to give a complete list of features. Fortunately, the smartphone listing on a Belarusian online store was quite revealing.

Although the Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 is listed online, the availability of the flagship-class device seemed restricted to select international markets. However, Jai Mani, the Lead Product Manager for Xiaomi India, just announced two new Twitter handles by the name of IndiaPOCO and GlobalPOCOPHONE. These social media accounts could indicate Xiaomi is keen to launch the POCOPHONE F1 in India as well.

The POCOPHONE is a new sub-brand from Xiaomi. The Chinese electronics company has other popular smartphone brands including the Mi and Redmi. Also, only one product belonging to the POCOPHONE brand, the POCOPHONE F1, has been revealed. Let us look at the specifications and features of the smartphone that were revealed by the Belarusian online store.

Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1: Retail Box Images Confirm Specifications

The upcoming flagship smartphone will sport a 5.99-inch IPS LCD display with 1080×2246 resolution and a pixel density of 416 pixels per inch. A Qualcomm Snapdragon AIE processor clocked at up to 2.8 GHz with an Adreno 630 GPU will power the smartphone. Also, the leaked images of the retail box indicate the POCOPHONE F1 will have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal memory. It is quite possible Xiaomi may launch some additional RAM and storage combinations when the smartphone launches officially. Incidentally, there’s a hybrid dual SIM slot for memory expansion.

The POCOPHONE F1 will feature a 12MP + 5MP AI dual-camera setup on the back. It will have AI-powered features like portrait mode and intelligent scene recognition. Moreover, the smartphone will also be capable of shooting videos at 4K Ultra HD resolution. For selfies, the smartphone will feature a 20MP resolution camera on the front with AI Portrait Mode and IR Face Unlock.

In terms of connectivity, the smartphone will have Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, USB Type-C, and 4G VoLTE. A large 4,000mAh battery will power the POCOPHONE F1. Interestingly, the battery will support Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 for fast charging. The smartphone will ship with the Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9.5 out of the box. However, given the recent release of the Android 9 Pie and that Xiaomi is already deep in development of MIUI 10, the company may send across an OTA update for the POCOPHONE F1 as soon as it is launched.

Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1: Expected Price in India

PCGarage.ro has listed the Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 for 999 RON. This roughly translates to Rs. 34,200 in India. However, early buyers can grab the smartphone for just 899 RON (Rs. 30,800 approx.) for a limited time. Also, the phone is available only in Graphite color option. Xiaomi may launch the smartphone as early as October this year in India.

As for the pricing, the company may choose to price the smartphone quite aggressively to compete with other flagship smartphones from popular Chinese companies like Huawei, Oppo, etc. Smartphone enthusiasts expect Xiaomi may price the POCOPHONE F1 at par rivals like the ASUS ZenFone 5Z and the Honor 10 in India.
