Vivo Y81

We had recently reported that Vivo has launched a new budget offering, the Vivo Y81 in India. And now, it has been officially listed on Amazon. There are also some launch offers which you can avail on the purchase of the phone. We’ve compiled everything you need to know about the phone here.

Vivo Y81: Price in India, Offers

The Vivo Y81 joins the Vivo X21 and the Vivo Nex in the list of recently launched Vivo phones in India. The phone is selling on Amazon at a price of Rs 12,990. However, if you buy the phone before 12th August, you can get an additional 10% Instant Discount with SBI Debit/Credit cards. Also available are No Cost EMIs on all major credit cards, meaning the total amount you pay to your EMI provider will be equal to the actual cost of your purchase.

Vivo Y81: Specifications, Features

The Vivo Y81 features decent specs for its price, starting with a notched display at the front, surrounded by minimal bezels. The display itself is a 6.22-inch IPS panel with HD+ 1520 x 720 pixels resolution and an aspect ratio of 19:9. There’s Gorilla glass protection present on the front, and the phone also comes with Face Unlock feature.

Coming to the specifications of the phone, it runs on an octa-core Mediatek Helio P22 processor, and gets 3GB of RAM coupled with 32GB of storage. There’s also scope for expandable storage of up to 256GB via MicroSD card. The phone ships with Android Oreo 8.1 out of the box and runs on Vivo’s custom FunTouch OS 4.0 skin on top. Powering the smartphone is a 3,260mAh battery. The phone supports dual SIM dual-standby (4G+4G) as well. The phone is available in two color options: one with an all-black back and the one shown below, which is a Gold back variant.

Vivo Y81Coming to the cameras, the Vivo Y81 features a 13MP (f/2.2) primary camera with some nifty tricks up its sleeve like HDR mode, pro mode, portrait bokeh mode, AI face beauty etc. Vivo claims that this new AI Face Beauty detects your gender, age, skin tone, skin texture and even the lighting conditions around you. On the front of the device, we have a 5MP selfie camera.

Vivo Y81: A bit too overpriced?

The Y81 features specs that are not bad by any standards. But, at its price of Rs 12,999, The Vivo Y81 directly competes with the likes of the Redmi Note 5, the Honor 9N and the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1. And once we take the competition into consideration, it starts to feel like the Vivo Y81 falls short on more than one parameters. Starting off with the Redmi Note 5, which features a better processor, more RAM (4GB) and a huge 4000mAh battery at a price of Rs 11,999.

Then comes the Honor 9N, which features similar internals as the Vivo Y81, but packs in a dual camera set-up at the back, and an impressive 16MP snapper at the front. Check out our quick review video of the Honor 9N here:

But where the Vivo Y81 really falls apart is when you compare it to the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1. The phone is really no match for the specifications that the Zenfone Pro Max M1 boasts of. And what’s amazing is that is priced at Rs 10,999 for its 3GB RAM + 32 GB storage model and for the price of a Vivo Y81, you’ll get the beefier 4GB RAM + 64GB version of the Zenfone Max Pro M1, which also sports a massive 5000mAh battery, along with a better processor, stock Android and an impressive dual camera setup at the back. There’s not one thing that we can say the Vivo Y81 does better than the Zenfone Max Pro M1, and if you ask our opinion, the Zenfone makes a much better buy than the Vivo Y81, whatever be your use-case. We really wish the Y81 was priced closer to the 10K mark, as that would have made it a really solid budget offering.
