The OnePlus 6 was one of the first non-Google smartphones to get the Android P developer preview. OnePlus did a great job at delivering the developer preview right on the day the phone was globally available for purchase. And now, it seems that the Chinese variant of the OnePlus 6 is receiving the HydrogenOS Public beta which is based on the final release of Android 9.0 Pie.
Google recently released the final stable version of the new Android 9.0 software to all compatible devices. The Pixel phones got the update on day 1, and so did the Essential Ph-1. So now, it is time for OEMs to step up and provide the software update to the supported phones.
OnePlus has already started the good work, and it recently announced that even the OnePlus 3/3T will get Android 9.0 Pie update. We have also heard that Huawei is testing the software on a few of its devices. Nokia is readying the Android Pie update for all its Android One devices as well. Now, let’s get back to the HydrogenOS beta software that was released for the OnePlus 6.
OnePlus 6: Android 9.0 Pie Update
As this beta update for the OnePlus 6 is based on the final stable release of Android 9.0 Pie, there will most likely be no major issues. The HydrogenOS Public beta is for the Chinese variant of the OnePlus 6 only. Do not download and install it on the international variants, as it does not include the Google Play Store.
If you are someone who depends on Google’s services, then you shouldn’t download the HydrogenOS software. In case you don’t care about Google services, then go ahead and download the software from the source link.
The OnePlus 6 runs on OxygenOS in other parts of the world. The company is also testing Android 9.0 Pie on the international variants, but hasn’t released a public beta yet. The release could be around the corner, now that the Chinese version has got the update. OnePlus will include its own set of customizations, and features on top of stock Android 9.0 Pie. You get a new Game mode 3.0 update, better color optimization in themes, and several other features and improvements.
The HydrogenOS beta update for the OnePlus 6 does have some features disabled or not working. OnePlus has mentioned that in the release notes as well. For example, the update does not support the global internet access feature, the WeChat fingerprint payment service, the Glory of the King game could have log-in issues, and so on. This is normal with a beta release though, and we are not surprise that some features aren’t working.
The release notes also mention that some third-party applications will not work with the beta update. Therefore, you should only install and try out the software if you are okay with all the above issues. Besides, the OxygenOS public beta based on Android 9.0 Pie won’t take much longer to release anyway.
