Huawei’s sub-brand Honor recently launched an interesting mid-range Android smartphone as an Amazon exclusive. The Honor Play offers hardware that’s capable of offering a fluid gaming experience. Honor has already confirmed that India has become an important hub for its smartphones, with its sales zooming past those of many other Chinese and Western brands.

Honor Play was recently available at very attractive prices on the Amazon Freedom Sale. Many buyers out for a good Android smartphone eagerly picked up the Honor Play. Fortunately, even though the sale ended just a week ago, Honor’s official website HiHonor and Amazon.in have once again offered the smartphone for sale. The one-day sale will start at 12PM today. Needless to mention, the Android phone has neatly fit into a price bracket that offers flagship-grade performance while maintaining a highly affordable price of Rs.20,000. Let’s look at the specifications and features of the Honor Play so that buyers can take an informed decision.

The smartphone sports a FullView 6.3-inch LCD with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 1080×2340 Full HD+ pixel resolution. Also, owing to a very narrow but visible notch, the smartphone boasts of an impressive 83% screen-to-body ratio. The smartphone comes in two configurations: 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 64GB storage. There’s a hybrid SIM card tray for memory expansion.

Huawei has embedded the tried-and-tested Kirin 970 octa-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz (4×2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A53) within the Honor Play smartphone. The CPU works with a Mali-G72 MP12 GPU. Interestingly, there’s a dedicated NPU for AI features. Also, the smartphone benefits from the GPU Turbo feature that Huawei has activated within many of its smartphones. Essentially, the Honor Play appears to be a great budget Android gaming smartphone.

The Honor Play packs a dual camera setup on its back. The vertically stacked unit consists of 16MP + 2MP sensors. Also, powerful AI features support features like Scene Detection and Portrait Mode. On the front is a 16MP single sensor for selfies and video calls. The sensor uses pixel binning technology to achieve an effective pixel size of 2.0um. The Honor Play is also capable of capturing 4K footage at 30FPS (Frames Per Second). A fingerprint reader at the back of the device is able to unlock the smartphone instantly.

A relatively large 3,750mAh battery powers the Honor Play. It supports Fast Charging as well. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, NFC, USB Type-C, and Dual 4G VoLTE. The mobile phone measures 157.91 x 74.27 x 7.84mm and weighs in at 176 grams. The smartphone runs on Huawei’s EMUI 8.2 (Android 8.1 Oreo-based) operating system.

Honor Play: Features

The most notable feature of the Honor Play is Huawei’s flagship Kirin 970 SoC. The chipset is integrated with artificial intelligence for optimized performance. The device has got GPU Turbo paired with the high-speed processor. Huawei assures that GPU Turbo feature draws 30 per cent less power for 60 per cent faster speeds. For a more immersive gaming experience, it has got 4D mode, where you feel shocks by phone vibration a la PlayStation remotes in addition to 3D visuals.

Honor Play: Hands On, First Impressions

The smartphone will come with a new EMUI 8.2 skin over Android 8.1 Oreo, face unlock with AI assistance, electronic image stabilization, phase-detection autofocus, and Type-C USB with fast-charging.

Honor Play: Price

Owing to the appealing specifications and capable hardware, the Honor Play is often listed as ‘Out of Stock’ on Amazon. However, the base variant of the smartphone carries a sticker price of Rs. 19,999. Interestingly, Honor recently boosted the internal storage of the Honor Play. The 6GB RAM variant now sports 128GB of internal storage. What’s even more exciting is that Honor has not increased the price of this variant despite doubling the storage memory.

The smartphone is available in three colour options; Nebula Purple, Aurora Blue and Midnight Black. Huawei’s sub-brand has not confirmed yet if or when the upgraded storage model will land in India. According to the promotions, Amazon is offering the 4GB/64GB variant of the device during today’s sale.
