ASUS Zenfone 5Z 8GB + 256GB Variant Will go on Sale From July 30 Exclusively on Flipkart

Asus Zenfone 5Z is undeniably one of the best Android smartphones in the mid-range Android smartphone category. It can certainly compete against some of the most popular high-end android smartphones, including the OnePlus 6. The company behind the mobile phone is now adding new features that only the smartphones with Android 9 Pie have.

Despite packing capable hardware and excellent features, the Asus Zenfone 5Z lacked a certain finesse on the software front. However, Asus has begun sending out Over The Air (OTA) updates that attempts to bring Android 9 Pie features, starting with gesture navigation. The intuitive process of moving through the Android ecosystem is rapidly taking over the traditional on-screen keys. The company could be preparing its eligible smartphones for the next evolutionary step in Android OS development.

Asus Zenfone 5Z Gets Gesture Navigation Support As An Option:

OTA update with build number 80.30.96.71 dated August 14, 2018 is being sent out by Asus. The update adds a new option under Settings > Display > Navigation Bar > Navigation Gestures. When enabled, the feature modifies the three navigation buttons commonly found at the bottom of the Android smartphone. It essentially combines the three buttons into a single button and allows it to mimic the functions of all three through the swiping gesture.

The gesture based navigation is rather simple, but takes a little practice to adopt. When swiped from the bottom of the center, the button brings the user back to the home screen. Swiped to the left, the button takes the users back to the previous screen. When swiped to the right, the button opens up multitasking tray. Incidentally, expect for the up direction, the swipe actions resulting from left or right movement can be customized.

As expected, Asus is sending out the OTA update in batches. Hence Asus Zenfone 5Z users who haven’t yet received the update should wait for the OTA notification. Of course, users can try and get the OTA update by manually checking for updates. They can tap the ‘Check for Update’ within the system update in settings.

Interestingly, Google is aware of the slight learning curve involved in adopting the single-button gesture navigation. Hence even the final and stable Android 9 Pie still has the option of reverting back to the three-button navigation. However, moving forward, Google is expected to complete abandon the old system and keep the gesture-based navigation.
