Popular smartphone maker OPPO unveiled its newest R series smartphones, R17 and R17 Pro at an event held in China recently. Both smartphones feature a water drop notch, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and are the first phones to feature Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. While the R17 Pro is expected to remain exclusive to the Chinese market, many of the key features of the handset are expected to be part of the next OnePlus flagship, likely dubbed the OnePlus 6T.

OPPO R17 Pro: Will the OnePlus 6T be Based on The Latest OPPO Smartphones?

The current OnePlus 6 is based on the OPPO R15 Pro, which was announced in March this year. Both smartphones have a 6.28-inch AMOLED Full HD+ display with a 19:9 aspect ratio, 16MP + 20MP dual-camera setup, and a very similar design. Not everything is identical, though. In the same way, the upcoming OnePlus 6T is expected to borrow some key features from the R17 Pro, although it will have at least a few distinguishing features to set it apart from the OPPO handset. We can expect OnePlus to use the same 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a water drop notch design, along with the triple-camera setup at the rear. The R17 Pro is the first smartphone to come with a TOF (Time of Flight) 3D stereo camera on the back. Since the OPPO R17 Pro will not be sold outside China, the OnePlus 6T could be the first globally available smartphone to come equipped with a 3D depth-sensing rear camera module. The primary camera, on the other hand, could feature a variable aperture, similar to the Samsung flagship devices. Another key feature that we are hoping to see on the OnePlus 6T is an in-display fingerprint sensor, which is among the key features of the OPPO R17 Pro.

OPPO R17 Pro: Specifications, Features

The OPPO R17 Pro features a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a water drop notch at the top and 1080 x 2340 Full HD+ resolution. As we mentioned above, the smartphone comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor and has a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on top for protecting against scratches and other forms of damage. Powering the smartphone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 octa-core processor, coupled with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

At the rear is a triple-camera setup with a 12MP main sensor, 20MP secondary sensor, and a third 3D TOF depth sensor. The primary 12MP sensor has an f/1.5-f/2.4 variable aperture, similar to the latest Samsung flagship smartphones. Thanks to the third TOF 3D sensor, R17 Pro users can capture 3D photos or connect it to a game console by connecting to a TV. For selfies, the R17 Pro features a 25MP front-facing camera with 3D Portrait lighting and AI-based beautification feature. OPPO R17 Pro also packs a large 3700mAh capacity battery with SuperVOOC charging technology. The company claims the smartphone’s battery can achieve 40% charge in just 10 minutes with the 50W charger bundled in the box. In terms of software, the OPPO R17 Pro runs on Android 8.1 Oreo-based ColorOS 5.1 out of the box.

OPPO R17 Pro: Price, Availability

The OPPO R17 Pro has been priced at 4,299 yuan in China, which translates to Rs.43,900 based on the current exchange rate. It will be available only in a single memory configuration with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. While OPPO hasn’t confirmed a specific date yet, it did announce at the launch event in China that the smartphone will be going on sale starting in mid-October. We expect the OnePlus 6T to be made official soon after the OPPO R17 Pro goes on sale in China. OnePlus announced the 5T in November last year, so we are hopeful of seeing the 6T go official in November this year.
