Airtel's announcement comes two days after Reliance Jio announced special plans for JioPhone users, and the two companies are offering similar benefits.

After Reliance Jio, Airtel has now announced offers for low-income customers to stay connected during the pandemic. The company claims that the new benefits are worth Rs. 270 crore and will apply to 55 million customers in the country. They will be available from the coming week. Airtel’s announcement comes less than a week after Reliance Jio announced cheaper offers for JioPhone users. The JioPhone is primarily used by low-income customers, often including people who are first time Internet users. With Jio and Airtel announcing offers, we’d expect Vodafone to follow suit soon.

What are Airtel’s offers?

Airtel’s offers are slightly different from Jio’s offers though. Here’s how they work.

  • Airtel is offering users a Rs. 49 pack to “over 55 million customers” free of cost. Subscribing to the pack will get you talktime worth Rs. 38 and 100MB of data, and it’s valid for 28 days. The company calls this pack a “gesture” and says it’s going to be available mostly to customers in rural areas, allowing them to stay connected.
  • Further, the company also announced a Double Benefits offer. Airtel Prepaid customers who buy the Rs. 79 recharge coupon will get double the benefits. The plan used to have talktime worth Rs. 63.95 and 200MB data, which should both be doubled now.

What are Jio’s offers?

Reliance Jio’s plans were announced on May 14, and as mentioned before, they are meant for JioPhone users. The company also announced two “special initiatives” that will last for the “pandemic period”. Neither Airtel, nor Jio have clarified exactly how long these benefits will be active for.

  • For JioPhone users, the company has partnered with the Reliance Foundation, and is offering 300 free minutes of outgoing calls per month. You can only get 10 minutes per day, making a total of 300 minutes per month, and the offer will be available only to JioPhone users for the period of the pandemic.
  • Jio also has a double benefits offer, of sorts, like Airtel. The company said JioPhone users making recharges will get an additional recharge plan of the same value for free. For example, if you recharge for Rs. 75 on the JioPhone, you will get an additional Rs. 75 plan for free.
