We all knew that Chinese telecommunications major Huawei is planning to launch a new Nova series handset early next month. The new handset called the Nova 6 5G — as evident from its name – is the 5G capable version of the mid-range Nova 6 that was launched earlier this year in China. The launch event for the Nova 6 5G is scheduled for December 5. However, fresh reports now point to the possibility of Huawei also launching another version of the Nova 6 at the same event. The company is reportedly working on another version of the phone called the Nova 6 SE which is likely to see officialdom on December 5. In fact, we already have the first images and specifications of what is said to be the Nova 6 SE thanks to folks over ay Huawei Club (@ClubHuawei) and Teme (@RODENT950) on Twitter.

Huawei Nova 6 SE: What we know

To start things off, this is not the first smartphone from Huawei to feature the SE moniker. In 2018, the company had come up with the Huawei Mate SE which was a rebranded version of the Honor 7X. The naming scheme of this handset was rather strange because nowadays you associate Huawei’s ‘Mate’ lineup with flagship-grade devices like the mate 20 Pro and the Mate 30 Pro. The Mate SE, on the other hand, came with budget specifications.

The first thing you would notice from the leaked images of the Nova 6 SE is its rear camera layout which seems to be heavily ‘inspired’ by the iPhone 11. Huawei lovers, however, can counter this by saying that the iPhone 11’s camera array was, in fact, a straight life from the layout we saw on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. The Nova 6 appears to have a quad-camera setup at the rear with a separate flash module below the camera array.

At the front, the phone gets a large display with a punch-hole for the front-facing camera. The display is likely to be an IPS LCD panel because the phone seems to have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that also functions as the power button. This is an arrangement we have seen on several phones in the past. This trend, however, has failed to catch up especially with the advent of in-display fingerprint scanners which look and feel cooler. From the leaked images, the phone appears to have a gradient pink finish at the rear with a not so common gold-coloured frame.

Huawei Nova 6E: Specifications we expect

The Huawei Nova 6E could come powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 810 SoC. This essentially establishes the fact that this phone is a mid-range product. It will support 40W fast charging. Other specifications of the phone  -including the camera specs and battery capacity – remain under wraps for the time being. The phone will most likely not feature support for 5G networks. As for an India launch, as of now, Huawei seems to have stalled most of its smartphone launches for India due to the ongoing trade war between the US and China.
