AMD is preparing to take on the mobile processing industry with its Ryzen 7000 Gen update, which includes the Ryzen 5 7545U processor. This next Gen Ryzen processor will be a hybrid of Zen 4 and Zen 4c architecture, aiming to bring improved performance and power efficiency.

Zen 4c Architecture: Enhancing Performance and Efficiency

The key focus of this release is the incorporation of Zen 4c architecture, which emphasises scalability and power efficiency. AMD has accomplished a critical milestone by using fewer cores that retain identical performance levels (IPC) – better performance while spending less power. As a result, the Ryzen 7000 series processors are appropriate for devices with a power envelope of 15 watts or less.

One of the most notable features of this update is the addition of preferred cores, a concept that differentiates between ‘Zen 4’ and ‘Zen 4c’ cores. The ‘Zen 4’ cores have a higher absolute clock limit, making them ideal for optimising bursty workloads. AMD ensures that workloads with different resource needs can be efficiently managed by prioritising these ‘Zen 4’ cores in the operating system scheduler.

Moreover, the Zen 4c architecture doesn’t stop at just power efficiency; it also paves the way for potential core count increases in the premium segment. This approach implies that future AMD processors can offer even more cores to cater to the demanding needs of high-performance computing enthusiasts.

The ‘Zen 4’ cores are more optimised for 1-thread (1T) frequency, and they scale well with power levels exceeding 20W. ‘Zen 4c cores, on the other hand, excel in non-thread (NT) efficiency and size optimisation, ensuring that the processor runs effectively while preserving a small core footprint.

One of the most exciting aspects of Zen 4c is its ability to pack the same number of cores into a substantially reduced space, reducing the core footprint by an impressive 35%. This leap in efficiency allows AMD to provide consumers with a broader range of options, ensuring that users have the flexibility to choose processors that best suit their computing needs.
