Apple iPhone 13 Face ID Stops Working After Third-Party Screen Replacement: Here’s What you Need to Know

It is unclear if the issue is due to some software bug or if Apple has further tightened its repair policies against third-party services not licensed by the company.

The new iPhone 13 series launched by Apple earlier this month is available on sale in India. Apple launched the four new iPhone models with a smaller notch among other upgrades under the hood. The 2021 iPhones continue to house a Face ID authentication setup that Apple first introduced in the iPhone X. Considered to be among the most secure smartphone unlocking mechanism, Face ID uses a number of sensors that map the user’s face and unlocks the device. Apple probably does not want users to repair the display or anything around the Face ID other than its authorised service. We say so based on a new report, which claims that Face ID stops working on the iPhone 13 series if the display has not been repaired or replaced outside of Apple’s authorised repair network.

According to a video by YouTube channel Phone Repair Guru, the iPhone 13 Face ID stops working even if you replace it with a genuine, original display. The YouTuber shows that the swapped displays (one of them being non-genuine) do not have any parts related to Face ID. However, despite that, the Face ID stops working after the screen has been replaced.

The iPhone would notify the user about the non-genuine display. However, it ideally should not result in Face ID not working as the display itself does not have any components related to Face ID.

It is unclear if the issue is due to some software bug or if Apple has further tightened its repair policies against third-party services not licensed by the company. Apple has faced severe criticism in the past for its policies regarding third-party repair services. However, Apple claims that it has done so to ensure that the user is aware if there are any non-genuine parts in their iPhone.

As of now, there is no official word from Apple regarding the issue. In case this is a bug, it can be patched via a software update. If not, it is best to repair your damaged iPhone at an Apple-authorised service centre.
