Apple finally brings Always on Display to the iPhones.

Apple has just announced the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max flagship smartphones along with two other iPhone 14 series devices 一 iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. This time around, Apple has ditched the Mini version as speculated earlier. The iPhone 14 Plus is a new (re-introduced) model in the lineup. Unlike the past few years, Apple has not upgraded the SoCs for all the new iPhones this time around. The vanilla iPhone 14 (and 14 Plus) sticks to the last-gen A15 Bionic chip and for this reason, now everyone’s eye and attention have moved up to the Pro models.

The Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the newest Pro models and these are successors to the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max respectively. The Pro models come with a new Bionic chipset, new camera features, battery life, and overall an all-around improvement compared to the last gen devices. As for the availability, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will be available for pre-order starting September 9th at 5:30 PM IST and will be available for purchase from September 16th.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro: Specifications and Features

The iPhone 14 Pro sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion with LTPO 120Hz refresh rate and up to 2000 nits peak brightness. The screen supports HDR content and a wide colour gamut. Always on Display also makes it to the iPhone finally with the iPhone 14 Pro models. Powering the new Pro model is the all-new 4nm-based A16 Bionic chip, which consists of six cores with two performance and four efficiency cores. This SoC is paired with a 5‑core GPU to handle gaming and graphics performance.

In the camera department, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro feature a triple rear camera setup with a 48MP primary quad-pixel sensor, a 12MP telephoto lens (3x digital zoom), and a 12MP (f/2.2) ultra wide-angle camera. The device comes with a whole host of camera features like portraits, night mode, night mode portraits, dual OIS for stabilization, smart HDR, macro mode, Apple ProRAW, and more. As for the video recording, there is support for up to 4K recordings. Selfies are handled by a 12MP snapper inside the new and large pill-shaped notch which the company calls Dynamic island. This is an interactive space, which essentially hides the notch by offering notifications and alerts from apps and services.

Like always, the company did not reveal the battery capacity of the device but, it is rated to last up to 23 hours on a single charge. . The phone supports wired fast charging and there is also support for wireless charging and MagSafe wireless charging. In terms of software, the new iPhone 14 Pro runs on iOS 16. The device comes in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of storage options. There is no word on the RAM yet.

Other features include Face ID, support for Apple Pay, 5G, 4G LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi, Siri, e-SIM support, car crash detection, and an IP68 rating for protection against dust and water. The phone also comes with support for satellite connectivity.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max features a large 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. It also supports ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. The iPhone 14 Pro Max weighs slightly more than the Pro model. As for the battery life, the device is rated to last up to 29 hours of video playback. Apart from the change in the display and dimensions, the rest of the specs are the same as the iPhone 14 Pro.

Always on Display

After a long wait, Apple has added the much-awaited Always on Display to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max devices. With this inclusion, the new Lock screen with iOS 16 will be even more useful, keeping the time, widgets, and Live Activities available at a glance.

New A16 Bionic Chip with new Display Engine

Apple claims this to be the fastest SoC on any smartphone today. The A16 Bionic is a six-core processor with up to 40% faster speed compared to its rivals. It consists of two Performace and four efficiency cores. The A16 Bionic is coupled with a 5-core GPU with 50% t more memory bandwidth for graphics-intensive games and apps. This chip is built on a 4nm process and can handle computational photography features seamlessly.

No SIM Tray for US

Apple is taking a 100% eSIM route in the USA as the company has removed the SIM trays for the US models from the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Dynamic Island

Dynamic Island is Apple’s new design that introduces an intuitive way to experience iPhone. In other words, this is actually a fancy name for a notch which does more than what you expect. Apple aims for Dynamic Island to offer an interactive user experience and Apple’s own app and services along with many other third-party apps can take advantage of the same. Ongoing background activities like Maps, Music, or a timer remain visible and interactive, and third-party apps in iOS 16 that provide information like sports scores and ride-sharing with Live Activities can take advantage of Dynamic Island.

New 48MP Camera setup

One of the most notable upgrades comes in the form of a 48MP main camera on the back. The 48MP camera with a quad-pixel sensor adapts to the photo being captured and features second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization. The quad-pixel sensor also enables a 2x Telephoto option that uses the middle 12 megapixels of the sensor for full-resolution photos and 4K videos with no digital zoom.
