Apple recently unveiled the new MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch models. The new MacBook Pro models are fairly identical to their respective outgoing models. The biggest upgrade that the new MacBooks have received is in the processor department. The 2023 Pro MacBooks feature the new M2 Pro and M2 Max SoC. Apple is now expected to launch more premium machines with the M2 Ultra SoC, marking a potential end to the second generation of M2 series SoCs. Later this year, we can expect Apple to launch the next-generation M3 SoC with a MacBook Air this year.
The next generation of M3 SoCs is expected to bring significant power efficiency stats. Apple is also rumoured to launch an iMac alongside the MacBook Air with the M3 SoC. The piece of information comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has a reputation for accurate Apple-related leaks.
Gurman claims that the new Apple MacBook Air and iMac are already in the works. These upcoming 2023 Apple products will feature the new M3 chip. The SoC is said to be based on TSMC’s 3nm process and could bring about 15 per cent performance Improvements while being up to 30 per cent more efficient.
Considering the Apple MacBook Air received a design upgrade late last year. We do not expect the M3 variant to get any major design changes. Gurman did not share any details about the upcoming iMac M3. We can expect it to sport a 27-inch display and bring some improvements internally, considering the device has not yet received any upgrade since the launch of the 27-inch M1 iMac launched in 2021.
Apple is also said to be working on a 15-inch version of the MacBook Air. This variant will have a 15.5-inch display, flat edges, a large Force Touch trackpad, a large, full-sized keyboard with function keys, etc. The notch is likely to remain at the top centre. Apple is also said to add a MagSafe port along with two USB Type-C ports at least. The 15-inch MacBook Air is said to feature an M2 SoC and launch in Spring 2023.
Gurman did not reveal whether the 15-inch MacBook Air will get the M3 SoC. However, if Apple does launch a 15-inch Air version of the MacBook Air, we can expect it to get a refresh with the M3 SoC when it launches. That being said, the chances of the MacBook Air M3 with a 15.5-inch display launching later this year would be less if Apple unveils the M2 variant of the same in Spring 2023.
The company does not confirm such details and often surprises consumers with an announcement via press releases. We can, however, expect an Apple event to take place in March for the new MacBook and other rumoured products expected to launch in Q1 of 2023. What are your thoughts about the upcoming MacBook Air?
