Apple announces free battery replacement program for select 2016, 2017 MacBook Pro models
Apple has announced that some MacBook Pro devices may exhibit an issue where the battery would not charge past one percent. Affected users can get their laptop battery replaced for free from Apple. The company made the announcement after rolling out the macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 update.
“The battery health status on these devices will also indicate “Service Recommended.” If the status indicates that your battery is Normal, your battery is not affected by this issue,” the support article reads. If your device is affected by the issue, you can contact Apple to get the battery replaced for free.
To check if your battery needs service, check the battery health. In macOS Big Sur, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Battery, select Battery in the sidebar, then click Battery Health. In macOS Catalina and older, hold the Option key and click the battery icon in the menu bar to reveal the battery status menu.
