Asus has finally launched its ROG phone for the Indian market, at a launch price of INR 69,999. The handset was first unveiled in June, and got great reviews. This is a high-performance gaming device that is unequalled in the Indian market, but the Indian consumer has access to imported gaming smartphones such as the new ZTE Nubia Red Magic Mars and Black Shark Helo.
The Nubia phone, if launched anytime soon in India for the same price as it was released for in China, will have a great price advantage over the Asus device. In this post, we will pit these three popular and new gaming smartphones against each other, so that you can make an informed decision before you hit ‘buy’ on Flipkart for the Asus ROG phone.
Asus ROG Phone vs Black Shark Helo vs Nubia Red Magic Mars: Price in India
The Asus ROG phone is now available in India, exclusively via Flipkart, for INR 69,999. You get 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage at this price, and there is no other variant. The other two handsets have not come to India yet, but you can buy them online. The Nubia Red Magic Mars was launched in China only yesterday, in three variants. The 6GB model with 64GB storage was launched at CNY 2,700, while the top-spec 10GB RAM variant with 256GB storage comes in at CNY 4,000. The ROG phone-equivalent 8GB RAM model with 128GB storage will sell for CNY 3,200 in China. That amounts to only INR 32,000, and so, it is significantly more affordable than the Asus handset. Even the top specifications Nubia Red Magic Mars phone costs just about INR 40,000.
Xiaomi’s Black Shark Helo went on sale in China late last month, at a starting price of CNY 3,199 for the 6GB RAM model with 128GB storage. The mid-term variant gets 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, costing CNY 3,499. The top-specced model packs in 10GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and sells for CNY 4,199. Even this phone is significantly cheaper than the Asus ROG phone in India, but the pricing may be somewhat higher when it is launched in India.
Asus ROG Phone vs Black Shark Helo vs Nubia Red Magic Mars: Design, Display
Of these three handsets, the Nubia Red Magic Mars is the lightest device, weighing about 185 grams. It is also the only one flaunting an RGB light panel on the back. All three devices offer a Full HD+ 6-inch display, but the Nubia Red Magic Mars is the only one with an IPS LCD panel, the other two being equipped with AMOLED displays. The Asus ROG phone shines well, with a Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on the front and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the back, 108.6 percent DCI-P3 color gamut, 90Hz response rate, and always-on HDR display.
Asus ROG Phone vs Black Shark Helo vs Nubia Red Magic Mars: Gaming Prowess
With the Asus ROG phone, you get three ultrasonic pressure sensitive zones, water resistance, ROG Gaming X mode user interface, and a speed-binned Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor overclocked at 2.96 GHz. This makes it effectively the world’s speediest phone, at least on paper. The other two devices also have a flagship Snapdragon chipset, but not overclocked. Where the Asus ROG phone falls behind is memory configuration, as it does not offer 10GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. You can get that with either of the other two handsets.
Asus ROG Phone vs Black Shark Helo vs Nubia Red Magic Mars: Software
Software wise, only the Nubia Red Magic Mars offers an Android 9 Pie-based OS, while the other two have their OS based on Android Oreo. In this case, hence, the round goes to the Nubia Red Magic Mars, since the other two might take a long time to upgrade to Pie.
Asus ROG Phone vs Black Shark Helo vs Nubia Red Magic Mars: Camera
The Asus ROG phone offers a dual camera and is hence, ahead of the Nubia Red Magic Mars in this aspect, but the Black Shark Helo is the best equipped. With the Asus ROG phone, you get a 12MP+8MP rear camera, and an 8MP front camera. The Nubia Red Magic Mars comes with a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP selfie shooter. The Xiaomi Black Shark Helo outdoes them both with its 12MP+20MP dual rear camera and 20MP front shooter. All three handsets offer 4K video recording, but only the Black Shark Helo offers 2x optical zoom, and only the Asus ROG phone gets 4-axis optical image stabilization and a wide-angle (24mm) lens for the front camera.
Asus ROG Phone vs Black Shark Helo vs Nubia Red Magic Mars: Battery, Verdict
Looking at the specifications, you can tell that the Black Shark Helo is quite a phone. However, look a little closer and you will see that it fails in some aspects too. The Xiaomi Black Shark does not come with a 3.5mm headphone jack, while the other two handsets in this comparison do. All three of these phones come with similar battery power, with Asus ROG phone and Xiaomi Black Shark Helo packing a 4000mAh Li-Ion unit, and the Nubia Red Magic Mars having a 3800mAh Li-Po battery.
However, the Asus ROG phone offers the best charging technology, Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 4.0, with a solid 30W adapter, while the Xiaomi and Nubia phones get 18W and 16W fast charging respectively. In favor of the nubia phone is its red color, which makes it look really attractive, while the other two handsets come in black only. To conclude, the Asus ROG phone is a great package for the Indian market, but it is priced quite high. The best all-round package, hence, is the Nubia Red Magic Mars.
