Design

One of the key aspects of the ASUS ROG selection of devices have always been their design element that tend to be edgy and flashy in order to cater to the gamer crowd. The ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2022) is no exception and looks very different from what a regular laptop would.

It comes with a matte textured body with a display that is propped up with two hinges that come out of the body of the device. Besides these there is the RGB highlight that run around the base of the laptop from the left to the right. This lights up the area around the laptop in an RGB glow when used in the dark. The ASUS ROG logo behind the laptop display also lights up in white when the laptop is turned on.

The laptop takes in cool air from the sides and throws it out from the rear end underneath the display hinges. The laptop feel premium from every end and has looks that compensate the same.

The keyboard on the ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2022) is not a full one with a numpad, but has RGB backlight. It lies on top of a patterned base with a large extended touchpad below it. The keys are the not the mechanical kind but they have a satisfying travel distance and feel when typing. These seem comfortable for long gaming hours as well as typing needs. The arrow keys have a smaller footprint which might make it tougher for some to use, but then again we hardly use arrow keys now. The touch pad is extremely receptive of the direction and swipes and has a soft matte texture making it easier to glide your finger through.

The bottom of the laptop has a serrated pattern with the branding on a bright green rubber stand on one end. The rear end of the laptop behind the display also has a spotted patter with black and the same green. This really does make the laptop stand out in a crowd of gaming devices.

The laptop has a lot of input and output ports in it and on multiple sides to make life of the user easier. One of the most convenient bits is that the rear panel of the body also has some of the integral IO ports that are necessary and in a spot that can hide it away easily.

The right hand panel of the device does not have any IO ports which is an excellent choice from the designers since most people use their mouse on this side and a plugged in wide usually gets in the way. All this side has is an air inlet.

The left hand panel of the laptop has two USB 2.0 ports along with a 3.5mm port for headphones and microphone combined. The rear panel has two USB 3.2 Type-C ports, along with an HDMI and an RJ45 port, right beside the power port.

Display

The display on the ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2022) is quite frankly one of the best I have seen on a gaming laptop yet. The 15.6-inch QHD (2K) IPS LCD on the laptop has excellent colours as well as crisp texture with viewing angles that make images visible even from the sides.

The high refresh rate of the display is complemented by the powerful specifications which is able to utilize it completely. This makes games appear butter smooth at higher FPS. This becomes a boon for those that use the laptop to play competitive shooters like Counter Strike Global Offensive, Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege and others.

The laptop is a complete entertainment package with the built in Dolby Atmos Vision with the 2k resolution with stereo speakers meaning movies and shows can be enjoyed on it better than most other portable devices.

Performance

The specifications of the ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2022) speaks for the performance capabilities of the device without us having to say much. But for the sake of being thorough, it performs as it is expected with the combination of AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX and Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti mobile version doing short work of game load and buffer times.

The new addition of the MUX switch on this laptop is of great benefit to games that want to change the display routing from the integrated graphics to the GPU on the fly. I played multiplayer games like Rainbow Six Siege and Valorant as well as single players like Death Stranding.

I played all games on 1440p resolution and it ran Rainbow Six Siege and Valorant with 210 FPS, and Death Stranding at Ultra with 90FPS. The laptop scored 3768 on 3D Mark’s Time Spy Test without the power cable connected and 10215 with the power connected. This is an impressive score and put it above most gaming systems available.

Battery and Charging

The battery on the ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2022) lasted more than the average gaming laptop with moderate amount of gaming and some work. It lasted for about 3 hours and some spare minutes.

In terms of charging the massive 280W charging adapter charges it up in about an hour and half. But this is where we run into an issue with the device. The native charging adapter comes with a large 15Amp plug that cannot be plugged into a regular socket. This is because the Indian Government has mandated that all electronic device with a rating over 200W must use a 15Amp plug. As a result you would need a spare 15Amp socket in the room where you intend to charge the laptop which frankly an average Indian household does not have. 15Amp power sockets are rare and are usually reserved for Air Conditioners. Hence when purchasing the laptop do have this in mind.

Should you buy the ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2022)?

The ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2022) is the newest all rounder in the Indian gaming laptop segment and at the starting price of Rs 1,06,990 it justifies that with specifications and performance top the boot.

The laptop screams hardcore gamer and can run some of the best games on a magnificent display that does full justice to the performance. It does have a few complaints which include the huge power socket and the lack of a native webcam which ASUS seems to address by including a GC21 portable webcam in the box. But in all this is an excellent device that manages to justify its worth. This is a recommended buy.
