Types of COVID Testing Procedures

There are two different types of COVID tests that help to identify whether the person is infected with the virus or not. The first one is the RT-PCR test and the second one is the Rapid Antigen test. The former is considered the gold standard for testing COVID-19, while the latter is used to determine SARS-CoV-2 antigens in the patient. Here’s what you need to know

Rapid Antigen Test

The Rapid Antigen test or COVID-19 Antigen test is a rapid diagnostic test that is said to be faster than the RT-PCR. However, the test also has a higher chance of missing an active COVID infection. In the antigen test, a swab is taken from the person’s nasal cavity. The sample is then tested on a reactive strip that has antibody-coated nanoparticles. If there are COVID-19 antigens, then the test line region will generate a coloured time on the test strip. If there are no antigens, no coloured line will appear in the test line region.

Antigen tests are not as sensitive as RT-PCR tests and there is a high of false negative. This means that the test can give a negative result even if the patient is COVID-19 positive.

Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction or RT-PCR test is considered to be the ‘gold standard across the globe to check for COVID-19 infection. The test has proven to directly detect the presence of the virus in a patient. The test basically detects the virus’s RNA. In this test, the RNA is first converted into DNA using an enzyme known as reverse transcriptase. The PCR testing then detects this DNA. If it matches with the DNA of the virus, then the patient is positive. However, there are some limitations to this test as well. The test cannot tell whether a patient had COVID-19 in the past. Furthermore, if a person is in the early stages of COVID-19, there are chances that the test will show a negative result.
