Disney+ Hotstar Spotted Testing Dolby Atmos Support on Android, Rollout Expected Soon

Available for a few movies now.

Disney+ Hotstar is one of India’s popular OTT platforms and rival to Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. It’s been exactly one year since the company hiked the pricing of its subscription in India and we have not seen many new features on the app or website yet. It looks like that’s about to change soon as Disney+ Hotstar is testing a new exciting audio feature for Android users.

Disney+ Hotstar is currently testing Dolby Atmos audio on the Android app. A user on Reddit whose username goes by Fantastic_Youth_5775 has spotted this feature on the app. It looks like the Hotstar team is currently testing this feature and a wider rollout of the feature could be rolled out soon.

Dolby Atmos Support Coming to Disney+ Hotstar Soon

As you can see from the images below, Disney+ Hotstar is currently testing the Dolby Atmos audio feature on select titles and the feature is currently available only for a few users. The Dolby Atmos logo is available next to the title of the TV show/movie, which gives a clear indication to users that that particular title supports Dolby Atmos audio.

As of now, Dolby Atmos support is available for select movies only. Only a handful of Hotstar Multiplex movies and regional movies now support Dolby Atmos and we can expect Hotstar to expand the list in the coming days. As of today, no English content supports Dolby Atmos. It is also worth mentioning that, Dolby Atmos support will appear on the app only if your Android phone comes with support for the same. As you can see from the screenshots, movies like “Vikram” and “Bro Daddy” supports Dolby Atmos audio.

The Dolby Atmos feature has been spotted on Disney+ Hotstar version 13.4.3, which is the current beta version on Android. We can expect the feature to roll out soon to more users across more content as well.

For those who are unaware, Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology that allows up to 128 audio tracks and the associated spatial audio description metadata to be distributed for optimal, dynamic rendering to loudspeakers. This audio feature will bring an immersive and theatre-like experience to the phone.
