When and Where to Watch Thooramukham
Sony Liv has announced that it will premiere Thooramukham, a period- drama based on true events on its platform on April 28, 2023. While informing the audience about the release of the movie, the tweet of streaming giant read “Based on real and relevant events from Mattancherry, Thuramukham is a fictional recounting of a forgotten chapter from Kerala’s history! Official Trailer and Plot
The historical drama is based on the same-titled play by KM Chidambaram. The movie, which was written by KM Chiddambaram’s son Gopan Chidambaram, portrays a turbulent period in Kerala history. The movie depicts the struggles of those working at the Kochi harbour and their demonstrations against dishonest bosses encompassing a number of eras. It also makes an effort to describe the notorious “Chappa” system used at the Mattancherry harbour, where workers were made to compete with one another for copper tokens that gave them the right to work.
Arjun Ashokan and Nivin Pauly are the lead characters of the movie and the period drama also has Nimisha Sajayan, Darshana Rajendran, Indrajith Sukumaran, Sudev Nair, Joju George, and Poornima Indrajith in prominent roles. The movie is directed by Rajiv Ravi and is co-produced by Thekkepat Films, Queen Mary Movies, Collective Phase One, and Pauly Jr. Pictures.
Reception
The film got good reviews from critics for bringing out the turbulent history of dock workers of Kerala, but the movie fell flat at the box office. Made at a budget of 15 crores, the movie earned only 2.50 crore in the first week, despite being released in 250+ theatres. IMDb also rated the movie 6.6 out of 10.
