PS5 vs PS5 Pro Specs Comparison: What’s the Difference?

The much-awaited PlayStation 5 Pro has been unveiled officially. The new console was revealed by Mark Cerny, lead system architect for PlayStation. This is not a next-gen console release but a mid-cycle refresh for the PS5 lineup, similar to the PS4 Pro.

Sony has packed the new PS5 Pro with upgrades and new features to deliver a smoother-than-ever console gameplay experience. If you have been wondering what the difference between the two consoles is, we are here to help.

Let’s have a closer look into what has changed in the PS5 Pro from the PS5.

PS5 vs PS5 Pro: Everything You Need to Know

PS5 vs PS5 Pro: Design

The PS5 and PS5 Pro share the same design language barring a few differences. The PS5 (Slim) comes with a single groove line on the front faceplate. This has been increased to three grooves on the Pro variant. The PS5 Pro’s height and width are the same as the original PS5 and PS5 Slim, respectively.

There are no other changes to the design of the console. Even the bundled DualSense wireless controller remains unchanged.

PS5 vs PS5 Pro: Graphics Performance

GPU is the biggest difference between the PS5 Pro and PS5. The original PS5 launched with a custom AMD Radeon GPU (10.2 Teraflops) based on the RDNA2 architecture. The console offers a choice between Performance and Fidelity modes on supported games. The only issue has been Performance modes can mean comprising on the visual quality for a smoother framerate.

This is the reason Sony opted for an upgraded and larger GPU on the PS5 Pro. It has not specified the GPU name/architecture yet but shared the improvements. The new GPU can offer 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory than the original PS5. It is claimed to be 45% faster at gameplay rendering.

The PS5 Pro will offer advanced ray tracing for a more dynamic light reflection and refraction. Another good thing is the new console can do ray tracing two times or even three times faster at times. It further gets AI-powered upscaling tech PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Not much is known about the tech yet but Sony says it will utilise machine learning to fill the missing pixels and upscale the image. This is similar to Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR. There is PS5 Pro Game Boost that should make over 8,500 PS4 games compatible with the new PS5 Pro features.

Overall, PS5 Pro promises to deliver a 4K 60fps gaming experience without compromising on fidelity. The best part is these enhancements are not limited to upcoming games. Several existing games will receive a free software patch update that should make them feel more realistic and smoother on the new console.

PS5 vs PS5 Pro: CPU Performance

The PS5 comes with a custom octa-core AMD Zen 2 processor clocked at 3.5GHz. Sony did not mention anything about the CPU while talking about the PS5 Pro. This leads us to believe there are no CPU-related changes or improvements in the new console.

PS5 vs PS5 Pro: Storage and Memory

The original PS5 launched in 2020 with 825GB SSD storage. Sony increased the capacity to 1TB SSD with the PS5 Slim. Now, the PS5 Pro has been announced with a whopping 2TB SSD. You are unlikely to feel the need for storage expansion on the Pro but in case you do, it is possible to do so.

As for the read and write speed, Sony did not offer any numbers suggesting there are no improvements in that area.

The PS5 features 16GB of GDDR6 RAM with 448GB/s bandwidth. There are no official words on the PS5 Pro’s RAM yet. Presumably, we will get to see similar RAM specs on the Pro variant.

PS5 vs PS5 Pro: Disc or Digital Edition

The PS5 is available in both disc and digital editions. The latter is the variant that does not come with a disc drive and only supports digital game downloads. However, Sony has released the PS5 disc drive separately that can be attached to the digital edition for playing physical games.

Unfortunately, the PS5 Pro has been released only as a disc-less console i.e. digital edition. It is unknown if Sony has plans to release a disc variant later. This means if you want to buy the PS5 Pro but also prefer playing physical games, you have no choice but to spend money on the PS5 disc drive.
