After months of leaks and teasers, ASUS has finally launched ROG Ally X, the company’s latest iteration in the handheld gaming PC. Announced last month, the ROG Ally X isn’t a successor to last year’s ROG Ally. It addresses many of the original model’s shortcomings with significant improvements in performance, RAM, battery life, and design.

ASUS Rog Ally X: Design, Specs and Features

ASUS Rog Ally is considered one of the best gaming handhelds in the market now, and this upgrade will surely be a substantial improvement over the original handheld, practically feeling like a true successor.

There are many changes in design and features except for the AMD Ryzen Z1 APU, 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS LCD Display, offered in the original model.

In terms of memory, the ASUS ROG Ally X boasts up to 24 GB of LPDDR5X RAM running at 7500 MT/s in dual-channel mode. The ROG Ally X features 1TB of PCIe NVMe SSD storage, an upgrade from the 512GB in the original Ally. More importantly, the ROG Ally X uses the more common M.2 2280 size drives compared to the 2242 size drive on the Ally, making upgrading the drive cheaper and easier.

The Ally X retains most of the original model’s ports but replaces the XG Mobile eGPU connector with two USB-C ports, one of which is a high-speed USB4 port that supports eGPUs. This setup provides an extra USB port for other peripherals.

The ROG Ally X’s most notable feature is its significantly larger battery. ASUS has increased the capacity from 40Wh to 80Wh, potentially providing double the battery life of the original model.

A redesigned cooling system featuring slimmer, more efficient fans tackles overheating issues, particularly those affecting the display during intense gameplay. Additionally, the repositioned microSD card slot eliminates previous heat-related malfunctions.

Speaking of the external design, it is smoother, with softer curves and deeper grips to better fit your hands for long gaming sessions. Asus has also improved the buttons and joysticks and claims they have been rearranged for easier use.

The company further adds that the joysticks are sturdier and give better feedback, and the D-pad is no longer sticky. The fingerprint sensor at the top is now recessed for easier location, and the back buttons have been made smaller to reduce accidental presses.

The ROG Ally X gaming handheld is now up for pre-order in select countries for $799 (around Rs 66,000). Available in black, it comes with a bonus 3-month Xbox Game Pass subscription and will be available from July 22nd. The Indian price and availability are yet to be announced.
