New PS5 System Update Adds Audio Focus, Brings Back Classic Console UI Designs

Highlights
  • Audio Focus is a new audio accessibility setting for PS5 players to increase immersion.
  • Classic console UI designs were first introduced by Sony to celebrate the PlayStation’s 30th anniversary.

Sony has announced a new PlayStation 5 (PS5) system update that will bring Audio Focus and classic console UI designs. The first one is a completely new setting, but the latter is a reintroduction of themes that first debuted during the PlayStation 30th anniversary. The new update will be released globally in a phased manner starting April 24.

PlayStation 5 Audio Focus: How to Use?

Audio Focus is a new PlayStation 5 accessibility feature. It is meant to increase the immersion by offering presets for soft sound amplification. The feature will help players get a clearer audio experience through headphones or headsets.

PlayStation 5 users can enable Audio Focus by visiting Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus. It is also accessible via the Control Center for quick access.

Once enabled, users can choose from the following four presets:

  • Boost Low Pitch: Amplify low-frequency sounds like roaring engines and rumbling noises
  • Boost Voices: Amplify voice chats, character voices, and other middle-frequency sounds
  • Boost High Pitch: Amplify high-frequency sounds like footsteps and metallic noises
  • Boost Quiet Sounds: Amplify low-volume sounds in a wide range of frequencies

Each preset supports Weak, Medium, and Strong levels that users can choose as per their preference. The best part is this can be set separately for Left and Right channels.

Sony says Audio Focus is available only for headphones connected via USB or an analog jack. The feature does not support HDMI connections like TVs, AV receivers, or soundbars.

Classic Console UI Designs Return to PS5

The latest PlayStation 5 update will further bring back classic console UI designs. These designs were introduced during the PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. The designs are inspired by classic PlayStation consoles: PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.

These designs will be accessible through a new Appearance setting. Players can pick their preferred UI design using the drop-down menu.
