After numerous leaks and rumours, Nintendo has officially announced the Switch 2, the successor to the original Switch, set to launch in 2025. A brief trailer released by the company provides a glimpse of the console, showcasing its design and shape. While it retains many similarities to its predecessor, it also introduces several significant design upgrades.
Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Announced
As showcased in the trailer, Switch 2 is bigger than the original console and comes with redesigned Joy-Con controllers. These controllers feature a sleek black finish with coloured accents and now attach magnetically to the sides of the console instead of sliding on and off.
A new button, positioned under the home button on the right Joy-Con, matches earlier leaks. The SL and SR buttons are also larger, and the trailer also showed that the Joy-Cons are being used as a mouse. The console also has a new USB-C port on the top and a redesigned kickstand shaped like a U, offering improved stability.
Backward compatibility is another standout feature of the Switch 2. Nintendo confirmed that both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games will work on the new console. However, some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Additionally, exclusive games designed specifically for the Switch 2 will not function on the original Switch.
The announcement trailer teased what appears to be a new Mario Kart title, hinting at an exciting lineup of games. Nintendo has not shared any specifications for the console and it has promised to share more information during a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2-focused Direct event scheduled for April 2, 2025. The broadcast timings where payers can get a closer look at the console will be announced at a later date.
