Sony has officially unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro as its most powerful gaming console yet. The Pro version of the original PS5 was part of rumours and teasers for a while. The new console has finally been made official nearly four years after the PlayStation 5 launch. It boasts performance as well as visual enhancements in the gaming experience.
Sony PlayStation 5 Pro: Price and Availability
The PlayStation 5 Pro is priced at USD 699.99, £699.99, €799.99, and ¥119,980 depending on the region you are from. It will go on pre-orders starting September 26 followed by the official launch on November 7, 2024.
Each console will come with 2TB of SSD storage, a DualSense wireless controller, and pre-installed Astro’s Playroom. The PS5 Pro has been unveiled only as a disc-less console. If you want to use physical discs, you will need to purchase the PS5 disc drive separately. You’ll also have to buy the vertical stand separately, similar to the PS5 Slim versions.
Sony PlayStation 5 Pro: Features and Specifications
The PlayStation 5 Pro comes with a slightly different design as compared to the PS5 Slim. It has the same Black and White colour scheme along with familiar faceplates. The biggest difference is the presence of three grooves instead of the single one we get to see on the PS5 Slim.
The console has the same height as the original PS5 and width as the PS5 Slim. There is no change in the DualSense wireless controller either.
The all-new PS5 Pro comes loaded with an upgraded GPU. It is claimed to offer 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory than the original PS5. Sony claims these enhancements will result in up to 45% faster gameplay rendering.
The players will get to experience advanced ray tracing for more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. The PS5 Pro is said to be double or even triple times faster, sometimes, at ray tracing as compared to the PS5.
The PS5 Pro will further boast a new AI-powered upscaling tech called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). It is said to utilise “machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.”
All of these improvements and enhancements essentially mean supported PS4 and PS5 games should run a lot more smoothly (60fps) on the PS5 Pro. The newly introduced PS5 Pro Game Boost feature can be applied to over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. The only catch is Sony says this feature “may” stabilise or improve the performance of supported games.
The PS5 Pro will launch with VRR and WiFi 7 support (in supported regions). The console will be compatible with all of existing PS5 accessories including the PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation Portal.
Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Supported Games
Sony says several existing games will receive a free software patch update that will make them compatible with PS5 Pro features. These games will have a new “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label within their title.
