Google Pixel 3 eSIM Support Expands Globally, Airtel and Reliance Jio Users in India to Receive It Soon

Google has announced that the eSIM functionality on the new Pixel 3 and 3 XL can now be enabled in India on Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

Google was one of the first to include the eSIM functionality on its smartphones. The Pixel 2 series was the first to get the feature that allows users to get rid of a physical sim-card. The feature was only available in the US in the beginning, but has seen some expansion in the last year. Now, Google is expanding the feature and making it available for more carriers across the world. In a new blog post, the company also confirms that eSIM functionality on the Pixel 3 and 3 XL are now live in India. However, only two carriers in India support eSIM for now.

Google Pixel 3 eSIM Support in India

The Google Pixel 3/3XL is one of the best camera phones of 2018. The company continues to use a single camera to deliver detailed and well exposed photos, including portrait shots. These phones also come with eSIM technology, allowing users to switch between multiple carriers without swapping the SIM. The phone has a single physical SIM slot, but there’s an additional chip inside the phone which can digitally store several SIM cards. When Google launched the phone in India, the functionality wasn’t available. However, it has now confirmed that the eSIM feature has been enabled for Pixel 3/3XL users in India.

Right now, only Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio provides this eSIM functionality to its users. To convert your physical SIM to an eSIM, you will have to go to the service providers outlet and ask for a conversion. It should be done immediately at any Jio or Airtel retail store. We are not sure if both the physical SIM and the eSIM will work simultaneously, but it does make it easier to switch SIMs. You no longer have to look for a SIM ejector tool or a hair-clip to change SIM cards while travelling.

Google isn’t the first to bring eSIM functionality to India. While even the Pixel 2 and 2XL featured eSIM, the latest Apple iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and XR were the first devices to provide customers with the feature. Several smartwatches such as the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch, also feature eSIM support. Once again, only Jio and Airtel users can make use of the eSIM option in supported phones. However, more carriers should start adopting the feature very soon. The search giant is also work on a new program that would make it easier for Android smartphone makers to include the eSIM functionality on their devices.

Apart from bringing the feature to India, Pixel 3 owners in Germany can get eSIM enabled via Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone. If you’re in the U.S, you can get eSIM enabled via Google Fi and Sprint. In the UK, the service is provided by EE. Other carriers such as Truphone and Gigsky will also enable eSIM support on the Pixel 3 in other regions.

Pixel 3/ 3XL to Get New Software Updates Soon

Ever since the launch of the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL (Review), users have been facing plenty of issues with the phones. For example, the RAM management on the phones were pretty bad. Applications would be closed automatically in the background if there were more than two or three apps running. Now, Google has confirmed that it will soon be rolling out a software update to tackle this issue.

Apart from this issue, Google Pixel 3 owners continue to face issues with bad audio quality while recording videos, battery drainage, display flickering, and many more. Hopefully, Google rolls out fixes for these issues as well.
