It’s been a while since we first heard of the Google Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL. Both these handsets were set to be announced at Google I/O 2019. And that is precisely what happened earlier today where Google announced these two handsets during the keynote session at Google I/O. In fact, we were the ones who published the first official press renders of the Pixel 3a XL just a few minutes before Google I/0 2019 kicked off. Anyway, let us now take a closer look at both these Pixel devices.
Google Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL: Specifications, key features
The Google Pixel 3a is the smaller (and lower priced) of the two Pixel devices announced today. Both the handsets have identical specifications, and the only difference is the larger display and battery capacity on the Pixel 3a XL. While the Pixel 3a gets a 5.6-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2220 x 1080 pixels, the Pixel 3a XL uses a larger 6-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.
Both the handsets come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 SoC. This chipset is based on a 10nm LPP manufacturing process and is an octa-core processor that houses six Kryo 360 Silver high-efficiency cores operating at 1.7 GHz along with two high-performance Kryo 360 Gold cores running at 2 GHz. The chipset also uses the Adreno 615 GPU and comes with an X12 LTE modem. Both the devices get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Typical of Pixel devices, there is no option to expand the memory using microSD cards. The ubiquitous 3.5mm jack makes a comeback on the devices. The Pixel 3a XL gets a large 3,700 mAh battery while the Pixel 3a gets by with a smaller 3,000 mAh unit. Both these batteries support 18-watt USB-PD fast charging.
Google Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL: Camera, Software
Both the Google Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL feature a 12.2-megapixel primary camera at the rear and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. Both the devices come with Google’s amazing Nightsight feature for excellent low light imaging. Both the devices run Android 9 Pie at the time of launch and will be updated to Android 10 Q as soon as it is available. Google also promises three years of software updates which means these devices will remain useful till 2022. Both the Google Pixel 3a devices will be offered in three color options, Black, Lilac Purple, and White. The devices will be sold starting immediately across several markets including India. The official pricing for India is yet to be announced. The international pricing for the Google Pixel 3a begins at $399 while the Pixel 3a XL will set you back by $479. Considering that both the devices are identical in all respect except the battery capacity and the display size, the Pixel 3a does look more attractive of the two. We expect both the handsets to be priced below the INR 35,000 mark when it is made official for India.
