At the Google for India 2023 event in Delhi today, Google announced that it will start manufacturing the Pixel smartphones in India. The first smartphone which will be manufactured in India by Google will be the Pixel 8, and the rollout of the same will begin in 2024. The search engine giant will partner with international and domestic manufacturers to produce the Pixel smartphones locally.

“India is a priority market for Pixel smartphones, and we’re committed to bringing the best of our hardware and underlying built-in software capabilities to people across the country,” said Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of devices and services at Google.

Locally Manufactured Pixel Smartphones Will Arrive in 2024

It was reported previously that Google is in talks with manufacturers such as Lava, Dixon Technologies, and Bharat FIH to make the Pixel smartphones in India. However, at today’s event, Google has not shared any details as to which of these will be making the Pixel smartphones in the country. Additionally, Google has not divulged any further information about the manufacturing capacity or the location of the manufacturing unit.

In a piece of related news, Google earlier this month partnered with HP to manufacture the Chromebooks in India locally. Both HP and Google said that it reaffirms their commitment to the Government’s Make in India initiative. The new Chromebooks will be manufactured by HP at its Chennai unit where the brand has been making a range of laptops and Desktops since 2020.

As mentioned above, the first smartphone that Google intends to manufacture in India is the Pixel 8. To recall, the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro were launched earlier this month in the country. The Pixel 8 price in India starts at Rs 75,999, while the Pixel 8 Pro costs Rs 1,06,999. The duo features the Tensor G3 chipset and an OLED display. Both smartphones have an in-display fingerprint sensor for security purposes.

The Google Pixel 8 boasts a 50MP dual-camera setup, while the Pixel 8 Pro features a 50MP triple-camera setup. Both these devices boot Android 14 out of the box and they rock a 10.5MP selfie camera. The Pro model offers 30W fast charging support, while the vanilla model comes with 27W fast charging.

It remains to be seen if Google will reduce the pricing once the Pixel 8 make-in-India initiative runs in full steam.
