Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the Pokemon Go-Like AR Game is Now Shutting Down

Niantic is closing down shop on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite made quite a bit of noise at launch and understandably so, it was the creators behind Pokemon Go, Niantic, taking on the Wizarding World universe. The idea was to let players across the globe explore their real-life surroundings and to take on the “Unforgivable” and have an AR-experience that is befitting of carrying the Harry Potter license.

The game itself was pretty solid, with cool easter eggs and narrative elements offering a ton of value to Potterheads. However, Niantic have just announced that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will officially be shut down come January 31, 2022 – but before it does, players will be able to see an end to the story as well as enjoy a bunch of gameplay changes starting November 2, 2021.

Some gameplay changes that will take effect on November 2, 2021:

  • All Daily Assignments will have their rewards increased
  • All Potion Brew times will be reduced by 50% with Master Notes
  • The daily cap on sending and opening Gifts will be removed
  • Barrufio’s Brain Elixir potion will now award 3× player XP
  • 1920s Portkey Portmanteaus will appear on the map more frequently and associated Fragment rewards will be doubled
  • Spell Energy and Ingredients will appear on the map more frequently

Not only this, but players will also be treated to new Lethal Adversaries such as Dolores Umbridge, Lucious Malfoy, and even the Half-Blood Prince in November. In December. Lord Voldemort Lethal Adversaries Even will definitely be a highlight alongside Horcrux Hunt Part 2 and Bellatrix.

Niantic hasn’t gone into detail as to why Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be shutting down, but speculation is that it simply wasn’t able to sustain the massive playerbase post-launch. Niantic has also explained players will not be able to recieve a refund on past purchase in the game and players will be able to spend their remaining Gold balance and items before the game closes on January 31, 2022.
