Just last week, it had been confirmed that Honor would be releasing a new budget smartphone in China. At the time, it was assumed that the phone would be called the Honor 8A. Well, the smartphone has just become official, and the Huawei sub-brand has decided to launch it under the Honor Play 8A moniker. It is unclear if this naming scheme is only for the Chinese market or international markets as well. Some speculate the naming convention shift might be related to the launch of the Xiaomi Mi Play that took place just a few weeks prior. Either way, let’s take a deeper dive into what the Play 8A has to offer for its remarkably low asking price.
Honor Play 8A Price, Availability
The Honor Play 8A has been priced at CNY 799 which roughly equates to INR 8,200. This is for the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant. A 64GB storage variant will also be coming soon, but Honor has not yet revealed its price. It seems that the phone had been offered on pre-order upon announcement, with shipments to begin on January 8.
Chinese e-retail site VMall has three color options of the Honor Play 8 to choose from – Magic Night Black, Aurora Blue, and Platinum Gold. However, promotional launch posters showcase a Charm Red color variant as well. Perhaps Honor will release that model at a later date.
Honor Play 8A Specifications, Features
We already had a good idea of what to expect considering most of the specs had been revealed with the leak of this phone’s TENAA listing. As we had noted then, the Honor Play 8A only features a single camera sensor at the back. There is also no fingerprint sensor to be found here. Security options will be limited to face unlock via the front camera, and all the standard on-screen options Android provides. The phone seems to be built with a glossy plastic rear panel along with a metallic frame. The handset measures 156.28 x 73.5 x 8.0mm and weighs in at 150 grams.
The display on the Honor Play 8A is comprised of a 6.09-inch LCD panel with a 720 x 1560 pixel resolution. While the top of the display houses a teardrop notch, there are still noticeably wide bezels along the sides and a sizeable chin at the bottom. Powering the smartphones is a 12nm Helio P35 MT6765 chipset that is paired with 3GB of RAM. Regardless of which storage option you choose, the phone will offer further storage expandability with the use of a microSD card. It uses a triple card for this, that allows the use of a dual-SIM configuration at the same time.
By default, the Honor Play 8A will run Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9.0 skin running over it. Then we have the imaging aspect where a 13MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture resides at the rear of the phone. Meanwhile, an 8MP f/2.0 aperture unit sits at the front for selfies. One thing the previous leak had gotten wrong though, is that the phone will come with a 3020mAh capacity battery. To recall, the leak only had mentioned the use of a 2920mAh cell.
