While 2019 saw a bunch of gaming phones flood the market, the category this year has been quite lukewarm. Other than the Asus ROG Phone 3 and the iQOO 3 5G, nothing else really comes with the extra features that gamers demand. On the other hand, most mid-range and high-end smartphones were equally capable of running just about any game you throw at them, just without the additional gaming-related perks such as Air Triggers and aftermarket accessories. As a result, our category of the Best Gaming Phone of 2020 for the Indian Gadget Awards 2020 has a mix of both as nominees.
Nominations for the Best Gaming Phone of 2020 for the Indian Gadget Awards 2020
- Asus ROG Phone 3
- OnePlus 8T
- iQOO 3 5G
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- Xiaomi Mi 10
Asus ROG Phone 3
For everyone other than mobile gamers, the ROG Phone 3 is a bulky proposition. But for gamers, the ROG Phone 3 is an unfair advantage. With the Snapdragon 865+ in place, the ROG Phone 3 offers a lot of compute power for games to run without a hitch. Furthermore, the phone allows you to tweak almost every aspect of the CPU and GPU performance, to find the sweet spot for each game. The 144Hz AMOLED display with 240Hz touch sampling rate is the best you can get for gaming while the Air Triggers on the sides helps when playing a fast-response game like CoD: Mobile.
Granted the OnePlus 8T doesn’t have half as many things that the ROG Phone 3 does, but with all the optimisations in place, the OnePlus 8T runs Android games at peak frame rates without a stutter. The touch response rates are good enough for quick gameplay, and the size of the phone is ideal for an immersive experience. The OnePlus 8T rocks a 120Hz display with the Snapdragon 865 under the hood, and the OxygenOS 11 software it ships with has ample features to keep distractions at bay while gaming.
iQOO 3 5G
Perhaps the only true rival to the ROG Phone 3 this year, the iQOO 3 5G was also one of the first smartphones to launch with the Snapdragon 865 in India. With flagship capabilities, the iQOO 3 5G can run all the games available in the Google Playstore, and you can also run old console games on it using official emulators available online. This one too has the pressure-sensitive shoulder buttons that provide two additional physical buttons for games like CoD:Mobile, and the sturdy form factor gives the ideal grip for high-intensity gaming.
iPhone 12 Pro Max
The iPhone 12 Pro Max offers the best performance this year among all smartphones launched this year. That automatically makes this the ideal smartphone for gaming. In fact, iPhones are preferred by professional mobile gamers across the world. The 12 Pro Max can handle every game available on the Apple App Store with ease, and it also gives you access to Apple Arcade which is Apple’s dedicated service for high quality mobile games. This one’s a no-brainer.
Xiaomi Mi 10
The Mi 10 with a curved 90Hz display and the Snapdragon 865 is just as good a gaming phone as any other flagship smartphone launched this year. Couple that with Xiaomi’s own Gaming Mode that kills all distractions while you are gaming, while boosting the game visuals at the same time, and the Mi 10 provides an enjoyable gaming experience among many others.
