Instagram has been spotted testing a new feature where users can generate their profile picture using AI. The feature was reportedly spotted by an app developer. Meta has also been spotted testing similar features for WhatsApp and Facebook, and hence this could soon be a reality for Instagram too. Here are the details.
AI-generated Profile Pictures on Instagram
Developer Alessandro Paluzzi spotted this feature in the Instagram app. He posted a screenshot on his Threads handle. The screenshot showed a ‘Create an AI profile picture‘ option. According to the image, this feature will be directly available when the user tries to update their profile picture.
No further details are available at the moment. It is possible the feature could be powered by Meta’s Llama AI models. The company has made several advancements in its multimedia-related AI models, some of which are already available in the Meta AI chatbot on WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
Meta AI is already capable of generating images using text prompts. A similar feature was also spotted on WhatsApp where users could create a new profile picture from scratch, by providing a prompt. It’s been over six months, but the feature has not arrived on WhatsApp yet.
Instagram currently allows users to generate an avatar, based on an actual image. The new AI-generated profile picture option will make it easier to have creative photos, and help users express themselves better.
Meta hasn’t announced any official plans to release this feature. We tried installing the latest beta version of Instagram, but could not access or spot it. We will keep you updated if the feature releases on Instagram, or any other Meta-owned app.
