WhatsApp has announced a new feature to improve chat sorting. The Meta-owned instant messaging platform announced the rollout of custom chat lists through an official blog. The new feature will let you add custom lists to the Chat Filters tab at the top. Let’s take a look at what the new feature is and how it works.
WhatsApp Custom Chat Lists Explained
You must wonder if WhatsApp has already introduced a Favourites tab to group important chats in one place. Then what are custom lists? The Favourites tab allows you to organise all important chats in one place but not sort them based on categories. The custom chat list gives you more granular control over how you want your conversations to be organised.
For example, you can create custom lists like Family, Friends, Work, etc., and group relevant groups and one-on-one chats in these lists. This makes it easier to check important conversations without scrolling through your entire chat history. Once a list is created, it appears in the top bar next to the already-existing All, Unread, Favourites, and Groups tabs.
You can instantly check the most important conversations in a circle with custom lists. For example, if you create a custom list including their work contacts, you can tap on the Work tab at the top and instantly check all the important chats.
How to Make Custom Lists on WhatsApp?
At the time of writing this piece, we have not received it on our iPhone and Pixel devices. However, as and when you receive the feature, here’s how to use it:
- Tap the + icon in the filter bar at the top on WhatsApp.
- Tap Continue on the contextual menu that pops up.
- Enter the List name like Work, Family, Friends, etc.
- Click on Add people or groups and select the chats you want to include and the new list will appear in the top bar.

WhatsApp has announced that the feature is rolling out gradually and will be available to all in the coming weeks.
