YouTube’s old rule for Shorts was to keep it under 60 seconds. But now, the game has changed as the Shorts duration has been increased, which will come into effect, starting October 15. Here are the details.
YouTube Shorts: No Longer Just a Quick Snippet!
YouTube Shorts will support videos up to three minutes long—and yes, they'll still be classified as Shorts. This taller format means creators can pack in more content, tap into current trends, and expand their audience.
If you’d prefer not to have your videos categorised as Shorts, upload them in a wider aspect ratio (16:9) to have them recognised as long-form videos.
What Happens to Videos Uploaded Before October 15?
YouTube Shorts uploaded before October 15 that exceed 60 seconds but are under 3 minutes will be treated as regular long-format videos, just like before. So remember, to keep it Short, it must stay under 60 seconds.
Wait! There’s More…
The Shorts update doesn't end there—there's more in store! Here's what's coming:
- Like Instagram Reels, YouTube is introducing trending templates that creators can customise. And yes, you'll also be able to ‘Remix' a Short if you feel like switching things up.
- Later this year, Veo, a powerful tool that generates videos, will make its way to YouTube Shorts. With enhanced backgrounds and standalone clips, creators will have even more control over their Shorts.
