What’s different?

1. Display Sizes

One of the major differences between the three devices is the screen size. As the name suggests, the iPhone 12 Mini is the smallest in terms of the screen size and overall footprint. iPhone 12 Mini has a 5.4-inch display with 476ppi, while the regular iPhone 12 packs a 6.1-inch display with 460ppi. Apple has decided to go with bigger screens on the Pro models compared to its predecessor. iPhone 12 Pro packs a 6.1-inch display with 460ppi compared to the 5.8-inch on the iPhone 11 Pro. While the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch display with 458ppi compared to the 6.4-inch on the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

2. Cameras

Apart from the screen sizes, cameras are the differentiating factor on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models. iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 come with a dual rear camera setup compared to the triple camera setup on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. All iPhone 12 series devices pack a 12MP primary sensor with f/1.6 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS), which gets accompanied by another 12MP sensor which is an ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.0 aperture, and 120° field of view.

The Pro series devices pack an additional 12MP telephoto lens with optical image stabilization (OIS). The telephoto lens enables up to 2x and 2.5x optical zoom on iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max respectively. iPhone 12 Pro series devices also get a LiDAR scanner which Apple had first introduced with the iPad Pro 2020. The LiDAR sensor helps with night mode portraits enabled by LiDAR Scanner. Apple is also introducing an all-new feature called Apple ProRAW (will be available later this year) on iPhone 12 Pro series devices, and all the four cameras on the devices will support deep fusion. iPhone 12 Pro series devices also offer Dolby Vision HDR video recording along with 10-bit high dynamic range recording.

3. Colors

The iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 come in funky colors similar to the vanilla iPhone 11. These devices will be sold in five colour variants including Black, White, Product (Red), Green, and Blue. While the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max is offered in simple yet elegant colors such as Graphite, Silver, Gold, and Pacific Blue color variants.

What all remains the same across all four models?

1. Design

As can be seen in the images, all the iPhone 12 series devices feature a similar glass sandwich design with an aluminium frame on the iPhone 12 and the 12 Mini, and a stainless steel one on the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. The design on the iPhone 12 series is reminiscent of iPhone 5 with flat edges. Apple has also reduced the bezels slightly compared to the iPhone 11 series resulting in an overall smaller footprint. Display panels on the iPhone 12 series devices come with Ceramic Shield protection which is developed in association with Corning.

2. Performance

The iPhone 12 series devices pack Apple’s in-house A14 Bionic under-the-hood with a new-generation neural engine. A14 Bionic is built on a 5nm fabrication process and offers improvement in terms of performance as well as efficiency. The 6-core CPU on the A14 Bionic has 2 dedicated high-performance cores while the other 4 are high-efficiency cores. A14 Bionic packs a new quad-core GPU.

3. 5G Connectivity

Apple with the new iPhone series is jumping on the 5G bandwagon, iPhone 12 series devices will also support mmWave connectivity in some regions and carriers.

4. Display Technology

Gone are the days of LCD displays as you will no longer find an LCD display on the new iPhones. All the four devices feature a Super Retina XDR display panels with HDR support. The display panel on all the phones is an OLED panel that supports up to 1,200 nits brightness, and a 20,00,000:1 contrast ratio.

5. Charging

iPhone 12 series devices support up to 20W wired charging and up to 15W wireless charging. Apple has also introduced MagSafe technology for wireless charging, which can be found across all four models.

So, which one should you buy?

iPhone 12 series devices have a lot in common and base iPhone 12 should suffice the need of most of the people, but if you’re a compact phone lover like me, iPhone 12 Mini is the way to go for. If you’re someone who can use a smartphone camera up to its potential, iPhone 12 Pro series should be your preference. The LiDAR sensor enhances the AR capabilities of the devices with its depth mapping technology, so if your work revolves around AR, iPhone 12 Pro series device is what you should consider. If you love a big screen on smartphones, iPhone 11 Pro Max is the device for you.
