Apple recently launched its new iPhones, including the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. During the event, Apple spent quite some time showcasing the gaming ability of the brand-new A17 Pro chipset. This is the first time the Cupertino tech giant has used the Pro suffix for a mobile chipset and is really leaning into it. The company showcased the Resident Evil 4 Remake and Assassin’s Creed Mirage running on the iPhone 15 Pro. Notably, the pro variants this year support hardware-accelerated ray-tracing dynamic lighting effects.
Popular gaming website IGN has now interviewed Jeremy Sandmel, Senior Director of GPU Software, Tim Millet, VP of Platform Architecture, and Kaiann Drance, VP of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing. These executives say the iPhone 15 Pro will be the best gaming console. However, in typical Apple fashion, they emphasised that the native AAA gaming support is not to compete with consoles but to give developers the best tools to bring their AAA titles to iPhone and give the user the best gaming experience.
Apple Working With Developers to Bring More AAA Game Titles to iPhone 15 Pro
One of the biggest highlights of the Wonderlust Event held by Apple was the showcasing of the Resident Evil 4 Remake and Assassin’s Creed Mirage running on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Apple has introduced raytracing on these iPhones for stunning gaming visuals and support for “AAA” console games. The Cupertino-based tech giant announced that Resident Evil 4 Remake, Resident Evil Village, Death Stranding, and the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be supported natively by the iPhone 15 Pro series. We can expect more AAA gaming titles to come iPhone lineup.
In the interview with Taylor Lyles of IGN, the team behind the development of the iPhone 15 Pro has claimed that the iPhone 15 Pro series will be the best game console. Jeremy Sandmel claimed this after Kaiann Drance said, “I think they say the best game console is the one you have with you.” This response came when they were asked where the iPhone 15 Pro stacks console-wise against PlayStation 5 or Xbox.
Elaborating on the console aspect, the executives revealed that they focused more on working with developers and bringing additional AAA titles to the iPhone 15 Pro instead of competing with consoles. The executives further claimed that with the iPhone 15 Pro, they are trying to deliver a smartphone that’s also a powerful game console that’s always with you.
The Apple executive also confirmed that iPhone 15 Pro models can play AAA gaming titles on the iPhone on an external 4K HDR display. However, it all depends on developers to take advantage of the tools being provided by the company, including the new Pro 6-core GPU, advanced MetalFX, and more. Upon asking whether these AAA titles will also come to Apple Silicon iPads and Macs, the executive again emphasised that the building blocks are all there and Apple will work with developers to make it happen.
Apple showcased the AAA games being played using a Backbone controller during the launch event. When probed whether a controller is the best way to play these games on iPhone15 Pro, the executives elaborated that they will allow both controller and on-screen controls. It will depend on user choice and the best gaming experience as developers dictate.
Giving the example of Death Stranding, Apple stated that the game is designed to be played using a controller, and users can do that. But if developers want to offer native touchscreen controls on iPhones, they have several software programming APIs and support from Apple to do that. For Apple, it’s all about offering the right gaming experience to iPhone users.
The most critical aspect of AAA gaming on iPhone raised by Lyles was whether these games would cause overheating. The executives quickly explained that developers could tune the powerful A17 Pro chipset and the new GPU to the max to cause overheating. But the company wouldn’t let that happen.
There are tools like MetalFX for developers to optimise the entire gaming experience on the iPhone 15 Pro while maintaining the gameplay quality. According to Apple, the display has excellent scaling tech, and the new GPU is designed to efficiently upscale. With features like raytracing, mesh shading, and advanced computing architecture algorithms, Apple is working with developers to offer high-performance gaming without compromising battery life and effective thermal management.
