iPhone 15 Series USB Type-C Ports Will Have Functionality Limitations: Report

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 series could get many upgrades. The new iPhone 15 series is expected to include four new models. There will be two non-Pro iPhones sitting below the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Apple is also reportedly considering replacing the Pro Max model with an Ultra branding. The top-of-the-line iPhone could get a new periscope camera. Some other details about the 2023 iPhone models have leaked as well. One of the biggest highlights of the upcoming iPhones is the inclusion of a USB Type-C port.
The news was indirectly confirmed by Apple executives when they said they will have to comply with the European Union (EU) rule of having a standard USB Type-C port in all phones, tablets, etc. from 2024. Now, a new leak suggests that Apple will include a USB Type-C port in the upcoming iPhone models. However, the USB Type-C cable that will be compatible with the iPhone 15 models will have to be MFI-certified.
MFI-certified means that the accessory meets Apple’s standards for quality, safety, and performance. MFI stands for Made For iPhone/ iPad. Ironically, USB Type-C stands for Universal Serial Bus Type-C. Adding a certain limitation to the overall performance might take away the ease of function and convenience that USB Type-C cables bring over Lightning.
Apple is said to use a custom integrated circuit interface for the charging port, which will allow it to authenticate the accessory that is connected to the iPhone. If a user sees a “This accessory is not supported” warning, then it is likely that the accessory is not MFI-certified.
Since it is just a leak, we advise taking it with a pinch of salt. However, Apple has had a reputation of adding restrictions and limitations to third-party products. Therefore, it the company does plan on doing so, it would not be a complete shocker but disappointment.
In case you are wondering, the existing line of Apple products, such as the MacBook, iPad, etc., do not feature integrated circuit to authenticate MFI or non-MFI-certified accessories. Therefore, if the upcoming iPhones do feature an IC chip for authentication, it would be a first for an Apple product with a USB Type-C port.
The rumour mill also claimed that Apple will differentiate with the USB Type-C standards for the upcoming iPhone models. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are likely to get USB 2.0 ports, whereas the Pro/ premium models will feature Thunderbolt 3.2 ports.
The iPhone 15 series is also expected to feature Dynamic Island on all four models. The Pro models are also expected to get the new A17 Bionic chip based on a 3nm process, static buttons, a titanium chassis and more.
Apple will launch the vanilla models with the same 48MP primary camera found in the current 14 Pro models. They will continue to feature a 12MP ultra-wide camera.
