There is no denying that the next big thing that will happen to the telecom sector in India will be the advent of 5G. But, before 5G becomes a reality in the country, we are going to see yet another innovative technology coming up to India, and that is being dubbed as Voice over Wi-Fi. Voice over Wi-Fi is a feature that can come in handy in situations wherein there is poor or almost no cellular reception available in order to make phone calls. In such a situation, if the user has an active Wi-Fi connection, one would still be able to make a phone call to anyone in their contacts using the Voice over Wi-Fi, or the VoWiFi technology, as we call it. The last time we checked, it was Bharti Airtel that introduced the Voice over Wi-Fi service to its customers in select regions and now, Reliance Jio has begun testing the same in some new regions of the country.

Jio starts testing VoWiFi in new regions, launch imminent

The report has come up courtesy of a Twitter user (@jayesh_mutha87) who claims that the Reliance Jio VoWiFi feature is working in the Nashik region in the Maharashtra circle. The user has also shared a bunch of screenshots of the feature. It is interesting to see that the screenshots that have been shared are taken from an Apple device which means that just like the Bharti Airtel VoWiFi, the Jio VoWiFi will also be available on select phones as of now. Furthermore, the Bharti Airtel VoWiFi service required the users to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network to be able to access the service. The same appears to be the case with the Jio VoWiFi as the screenshots clearly show the Reliance JioFiber network being used on the device.

The Jio VoWiFi is currently available in the Nashik region in Maharashtra circle and in the Delhi NCR region, but the company is looking forward to expanding the service to more regions in the coming time.

Speaking of the Airtel VoWiFi service, the service is currently available just in Delhi and only a few smartphone manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus are supported as of now. The devices like iPhone X, iPhone 11, OnePlus 7, Redmi K20, and Poco F1 are amongst the list of the supported devices.

In order to enable the Airtel VoWiFi service, all you need to do is to hit the settings menu and locate the network settings. Post that, you will have to enable VoLTE for your SIM card and connect to the right Wi-Fi network. That’s it. Doing this will show the Voice over Wi-Fi option in your device and you will be able to make phone calls over your Wi-Fi network.

As of now, this is all we know about the Voice over Wi-Fi service and we can certainly expect the service to reach a wider audience in the coming days. What are your thoughts on the same? Do let us know in the comments section below.
