Intel Core Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake) Processors Launched; Claims Better Battery Life and AI Performance

Highlights
  • The next generation of Intel Core Ultra processors is here
  • Intel Core Ultra 200V processors claim to beat Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite in battery benchmarks.

Intel launched its new generation of Intel Core Ultra processors at an event held in Berlin ahead of IFA 2024. Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors codenamed Lunar Lake, are aimed at the AI PC experience, and Intel promises performance improvements in CPU, GPU and NPU side. Here’s everything you need to know about Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors.

The new Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors come with the new Lion Cove P-cores and Skymont E-cores. Depending on processor models, P-cores can go to a max turbo frequency of up to 5.1Ghz and the E-cores can go to a max turbo frequency of up to 3.7Ghz. The new processors will have no hyper-threading and will be equipped with soldered-on memory, preventing future RAM expansion possibilties.

Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors come with the new Intel Arc built-in GPU based on the new Xe2 GPU architecture. Intel calls this the fastest built-in GPU in a processor ever and promises up to 31% performance improvement over its predecessor.

Intel says the new Intel Arc 140V iGPU on Intel Core Ultra 9 288V offers up to 16% better graphical performance than the newly launched AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX370 iGPU and 68% better graphical performance than the Qualcomm XIE-84-100 iGPU.

Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors offer “unmatched AI compute”; the new NPU promises performance up to 48 TOPS (tera operations per second). It also delivered 120 total platform TOPS, across CPU, GPU and NPU. This NPU is claimed to be 4x more powerful than the previous generation.

Intel Core Ultra 200V Processors Claims Up to 20 Hours of Battery

Efficiency is at the ‘core’ of the new Core Ultra 200V platform. Intel promises the best battery life among x86 processors and promises up to 20 hours of battery life. The Intel Core Ultra 9 288V can be seen beating the lower variant of the Snapdragon X Elite chip in the UL Procyon Office Productivity benchmark.

The image below also shows how Intel claims that the Core Ultra 7 268V can beat the middle-tier variant of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite in the same test. It seems like AMD’s Strix Point processors are also thrown into the mix. This should be an interesting fight, something we will be testing in our reviews to come.
