Ahead of the launch of the Lenovo Z5, the company’s VP Chang Cheng left no stone unturned to market it as a futuristic device with some chart-topping features. The actual device was a far cry from the one shown in various sketches and renders. It was neither bezel-less nor did it have a 4TB of storage as speculated. Needless to say, the misinformation left a bitter taste in the mouth of customers. However, it turned out that the company planned to expand the series. At the beginning of this month, Lenovo unveiled the Z5 Pro, which rocks the Snapdragon 710 SoC. And now, Lenovo is adding another phone to the line by the name of Lenovo Z5s and by the looks of it, it is more like the Z5 that Lenovo had teased but failed to deliver.

Finally A Flagship Phone From Lenovo

It seems as if Lenovo wants to end the year on a good note. According to some pictures recently leaked on Twitter, the rumored Lenovo Z5s is a near bezel-less device with a triple camera system and a fingerprint scanner on the back. The rear camera system is divided into two separate modules, a la Huawei P20 Pro (review). Of course, it remains to be seen if cribbing the design would be enough to match the camera performance of Huawei’s acclaimed phone.  The volume rockers and the power/lock button can be spotted on the right hand of the device. There is also a very small, teardrop-shaped notch on the front to maximize the screen estate. The device shown in the leaked picture doesn’t seem to have a very exciting design, nor does it have a premium feel to have. The bland gray paint job looks a tad bit boring.

What’s Under The Hood

Bearing the model number L78071, the Lenovo Z5s has already been certified by TENAA, 3C, and MIIT, so it might launch before this year ends, probably sometime in December. Per reports, the phone sports a massive a 6.3-inch display and packs in a 3,210mAh battery. According to TENAA, the phone will measure 156.7×74.5×7.8 mm.

The most interesting rumor is that this might be the first phone to be fueled by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 SoC, which is expected to be unveiled next month. If this indeed is the case, the Lenovo Z5s will directly compete with the likes of iPhone XS (review)and Huawei Mate 20, since these smartphones are also underpinned by homebrewed 7nm chipsets. The Snapdragon 8150 is expected to have an octa-core CPU and will reportedly feature two high-performance Kryo Gold Plus cores, Gold cores, and Silver cores for efficiency. The processor will also have a new neural processing unit.

The Snapdragon 8150 SoC is expected to fuel many flagships in 2019, some of which might be released in March, after their unveiling at the MWC in February. This means that the Lenovo Z5s will duke it out with premium offerings from other manufacturers, some of which will also be 5G-ready and come with an in-display fingerprint reader. Moreover, the likes of Samsung and Huawei are also expected to go all out on camera specifications and memory configurations, so it remains to be seen if the Lenovo Z5s would stand a chance against them.
