The flagship smartphone from LG for 2019 is expected to be called the LG G8, and speculation is rife that the device will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2019, which will be held in Barcelona, Spain, in the last week of February. 91Mobiles and OnLeaks have published leaked renders of a device that they claim to be LG G8, but one of the most senior officials at LG has refuted the claim.
The device in the leaked renders is not the LG G8, LG’s global spokesperson Ken Hong said once, and in another interview, he called the leaked renders only speculation. But given that OnLeaks is usually reliable, and that the device in the leaked renders resembles the key design features of the LG G7 ThinQ, it is not hard to believe that the renders could be showing the LG G8.
Leaked LG G8 Renders Show Predictable Design
The leaked renders believed to be of the LG G8 show a device quite similar in design to the LG G7 Plus ThinQ, which, in spite of its ‘Plus’ branding, was launched as the more affordable variant of LG’s latest flagship phone. There is the glass back and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor that rules out the possibility of an in-display fingerprint sensor.
While the camera setup was vertical in the current flagship device, the LG G8 has a horizontally aligned dual-camera at the rear. Given the penchant triple and quad rear camera trend in 2019, we must say that LG seems to be keeping it simple with the LG G8, something is also seen on display side of the device with a rectangular and conventional notch.
As you may have seen in recent leaks and launched, most flagship phones in 2019 will have either a waterdrop style notch or a pinhole camera in the display. The good thing is that the chin on the display in the LG G8 is quite narrow, and it is expected to be a 6.1-inch display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It appears that the LG G8 will have a dual front camera and that it will keep a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom.
The volume buttons and a dedicated Google Assistant button can be seen on the left side of the phone, while the power button and SIM card slot is on the right side. Overall, the design looks really clean and nice, but very 2018.
Expected Key Features of LG G8
LG has refrained from hinting any features of the LG G8 so far, but several leaks have pointed to certain specifications that are believable. These include 5G support and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. If the phone is launched early and does not feature either of these two key components, it will not exactly be a surprise, but then, LG will find it difficult to set the phone against the flagship devices of other brands that are readying up for 7nm chipsets and 5G connectivity. On the other hand, if LG prices the device substantially lower than other flagship phones, it could prove to be a decent bargain. However, having seen LG over the past few years, we don’t think LG will make the right move at the right time.
There is the possibility that the leaked renders are not showing the LG G8, and that the LG device seen here is a different one. If that is true, it could be that the renders are showing a lower-specced variant of the LG G8, which could be more affordable and less equipped than the flagship device. Some rumors claim that the LG G8 flagship device will come with a detachable screen accessory.
