The designers at OPPO worked on an aesthetic experience that resonates with the Milky Way. The Reno Glow design puts in practice an industry-first AG (Anti-Glare) Glass Process that renders a stunning look to the device. Here’s the story behind how the fascinating Reno Glow design came into being –

How did the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G get the Reno Glow Design?
Frosted glass finish has been the mainstream smartphone glass design used in flagships for a while now. These properties of the design are derived from the engraving technique which transforms the regular, glossy glass with a frosted finish.
With the OPPO Reno5 Pro, the company wanted to go a bit further. The designers at OPPO questioned – How can anti-glare glass be crystal clear, in a way that shines bright?
After extensive research done by OPPO’s engineers on AG Glass, it was discovered that tiny crystal structures created during the engraving process were crucial in directing how the material reflects light. For a bright lustrous finish on the Reno5 Pro 5G, the crystal structures have been designed as six-sided cones as the edges of these cones could reflect light; leading to the visible bright, dazzling effect under light. On the Astral Blue variant, OPPO took this technique a notch further by increasing the surface area of the light-reflective edges of the crystal structures to make the AG glass shine brighter.
How the Reno Glow Design was discovered
While designing the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G, the dedicated team along with the glass manufacturer tested over 30 different engraving formulae for an entire month, before finally discovering a pyramid-like structure to have the largest reflecting surface area. But the crystals did not appear properly. Further research led to the identification of a glass material embedded with more magnesium and potassium to be the optimal material to grow the pyramid crystals.
Handling this new material required careful precision. The new crystal structure had strict temperature requirements in its production process, with the temperature needing to be controlled within a 1℃ range. The team also had to test over 100 different temperatures before finding the optimal one. They also figured out how to evenly immerse the clear, blemish-less glass into the etching solution by endlessly testing and optimizing the pouring angle of the solution. They ended up trying over 200 different angles. With each meticulous adjustment to the angle, there were huge effects on the uniformity of the crystals. The next parameter to fix was the pouring time. This heavily impacts the size and height of the crystals. After multiple testing, engineers figured out that a time of four minutes gave rise to crystals with the best reflectivity.
OPPO engineers also spent 15 days optimizing the production technique. Changing the product line layout, as well as the clamp mechanism, which resulted in a yield rate of 20% to 90 %. This not only matches the efficiency of the previous generation but also surpasses it.
After so much hard work, the new Reno Glow process was born which comes in the Astral Blue version of OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G. It has the anti-fingerprint yet shimmery and bright frosted glass.
