Microsoft has now started testing Alexa support for its Xbox One gaming console. The move comes soon after Xbox veteran Albery Penolloa joined Amazon earlier this year to help grown Alexa’s presence in the gaming market. Incidentally, Microsoft and Amazon are also working on integrating their digital assistant, and a new preview is already being offered to both Cortana and Alexa users in the US.
Control Your Xbox with Voice Commands Using Alexa
The Redmond giant has released an Xbox Skill for Alexa that will allow Echo, Sonos, and various other Alexa-enabled devices to control the Xbox One. Microsoft is allegedly taking help of its Xbox Insiders to test this all-new feature. The integration of Alexa with Xbox One would be immensely beneficial for hardcore games. It would allow them to directly power on an Xbox One with their voice. That aside, they can even launch games, adjust volumes, start broadcast and even capture screenshots by simply interacting with the assistant using their voice. The commands are as easy, “Alexa, start Destiny 2.” You would, however, require an Alexa powered smart speaker for interacting with the Xbox One with these commands.
Many of these features were previously supported by Kinect before Microsoft decided to pull the plug on the same late last year. Therefore, the Alexa integration was a pretty obvious move. The merger of Cortana and Alexa is further helping Microsoft’s fate, as the latter was much popular among users across the world, all thanks to Amazon’s affordable smart speakers.
Previously, Microsoft was rumored to integrate Google Assistant with its Xbox One. With the Alexa integration now in testing phases, it won’t be surprising to see the company announced integration for Google’s smart assistant in near future. In an official statement, Microsoft has revealed that it will continue to grow its voice integration across devices, digital assistants and voice services, thereby giving a hint towards a future collaboration with Google.
How to Experience Xbox Skill with Alexa?
Xbox Insiders residing in the US can try out the Xbox Skill with Alexa by following a few simple steps. First sign in to your Xbox account from the console, thereafter head over to this page and log in using your Amazon account credentials. Next, allow Alexa to discover your Xbox and then keep following the instruction on the screen to pair your console with the assistant. Finally, try out your first Alexa command to check if everything is in place.
