India’s sub-Rs 40,000 price segment has lately been populated with several interesting offerings. The recent one is the Vivo V40, a well-rounded phone with ZEISS cameras. But it has an equally good competitor, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro, with a 144Hz display, a clean Android experience, and more. So, which offers more value for money and is an all-rounder? We have compared both phones to find out.

Vivo V40 vs Motorola Edge 50 Pro: Price in India

Motorola Edge 50 Pro | 8GB+256GB | Rs 31,999 |
12GB+256GB | Rs 35,999 |
The Motorola Edge 50 Pro wins in this department, given its lower starting price. It also stays under Rs 40,000, while the V40 slightly exceeds the mark. However, Vivo’s offering has more RAM and storage configurations.
Vivo V40 vs Motorola Edge 50 Pro: Design
The Vivo V40 offers a brand-new design, which is good to see. The phone comes in Titanium Grey, Lotus Purple, and Ganges Blue, and we got to try out the blue shade. It has a nice wavy texture at the back and is quite lightweight. The build quality is superb, and you will hardly feel the plastic build.
The Motorola Edge 50 Pro also has a premium feel, and the colours are quite attractive, thanks to the brand’s partnership with Pantone. It comes in Vanilla Cream, Moonlight Pearl, Black Beauty, and Luxe Lavender, and we have the Luxe Lavender option. Its vegan leather finish is easy to hold but can attract dirt and dust.
Both phones have an IP68 rating, which is good. This means they are dust—and water-resistant. While both phones look equally good, the Edge 50 Pro has a vegan leather finish, while the V40 has a sleek chassis.
Vivo V40 vs Motorola Edge 50 Pro: Display
Vivo V40 | Motorola Edge 50 Pro
Display Type | AMOLED, 120Hz | AMOLED, 144Hz |
Display Size | 6.78 inches | 6.7 inches |
Display Resolution | 1260×2800 pixels | 2712 x 1220 pixels |
Speakers | Stereo speakers | Stereo speakers |
The V40 has a 3D curved display that reproduces good colours and has balanced brightness levels, both indoors and outdoors. The blacks are deep, and dark scenes are easy to watch without much trouble. The in-display fingerprint scanner is snappy, and the 120Hz refresh rate is smooth, too. The phone’s stereo speakers are loud and clear, but the audio feels distorted after 70% volume levels.
The Edge 50 Pro also has a curved display, making the content crisp and vivid. The 144Hz refresh rate is very smooth but can hamper battery life. The good part is that you can decrease the refresh rate to 120hz to save battery. The stereo speakers are clear, but the output is a bit flat.
Both phones are evenly matched in the display department, but the Edge 50 Pro would be an ideal choice if you want a higher refresh rate.
Vivo V40 vs Motorola Edge 50 Pro: Cameras
Vivo V40 | Motorola Edge 50 Pro
Cameras | 50MP 1/1.56-inch, f/1.88, with OIS main camera, 50MP (ultra-lens), f/2.0, with autofocus, 119-degree field of view, | 50MP, f/1.4, OIS main camera, 13MP ultra-wide angle and macro camera, 10MP 3x telephoto camera |

Selfie Cameras | 50MP with f/2.0, 92-degree field of view | 50MP, f/1.9 |
The Vivo V40 is the first non-Pro V-series phone with ZEISS cameras, and the results produced are detailed and crisp. The colours are close to natural, but there’s a colour shift when it comes to 2x shots with human subjects. Ultra-wide photos feel stretched, but portrait shots have excellent edge detection.
Low-light shots will lose details, but the proprietary Aura light helps fix this problem to some extent. This is also helpful for selfies and primary camera photos. Selfies come out nice and detailed, with natural skin tones and minimal smoothing.
The Edge 50 Pro’s main camera captures detailed images, and while the Pantone partnership claims to offer natural colours, this isn’t the case, as the colours appear warmer. The ultra-wide lens is also good, with less distortion at the edges.
It’s an OK report for the 3x and low-light shots (which need some artificial light for good results, though). Selfies taken are detailed, too, but challenging lighting conditions are difficult for the phone to handle. The processing also takes some time, which can be a little annoying.
The V40 and the Edge 50 Pro offer good camera experiences, but if we have to choose, the V40 takes the lead here with its ZEISS backing.
Vivo V40 vs Motorola Edge 50 Pro: Performance
Motorola Edge 50 Pro | Vivo V40
Chipset | Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 | Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 |
RAM and Storage | Up to 12GB/512GB | Up to 12GB/512GB |
AnTuTu Scores | 748115 | 813,692 |
Geekbench Single Core Scores | 1134 | 1173 |
Geekbench Multi-Core Scores | 2910 | 3172 |
The V40 and the Edge 50 Pro have the same Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset. In real-world usage, both phones can easily perform routine tasks, and despite the Edge 50 Pro’s use of UFC 2.2 tech, data transfer wasn’t slow. However, on the synthetic benchmarks, the Vivo V40 is ahead of the game and secures impressive scores.
As for the UI, the Edge 50 Pro’s HelloUI based on Android 14 is quite aesthetic and easy to navigate. It’s clean and comes with features such as Moto Gestures and various AI tricks. We particularly liked the Style Sync feature.
The V40 also has Android 14, and the experience is good, but FunTouch OS’s bloatware can be problematic. Those who prefer a clean UI will lean towards the Edge 50 Pro. Both offer a 3+4 update cycle, which is good.
Vivo V40 vs Motorola Edge 50 Pro: Battery and Charging
Vivo V40 | Motorola Edge 50 Pro
Type | 5,500mAh, non-removable | 4,500mAh, non-removable |
Charging | 80W | 125W |
Charging time (tested) | 0 to 100% in 51 minutes | 0 to 100% in 23 minutes |
The V40 has a bigger battery, which will last you long. It lasted 19 hours and 21 minutes in the PCMark test, which is remarkable and fully charged in under an hour.
The Edge 50 Pro, on the other hand, has a smaller battery. Compared to the V40, it lasted for 9 hours and 51 minutes in the same PCMark test. However, it can easily last a day in real-world usage. Moto’s charging time was impressive thanks to the 125W charger, which ensures the phone is fully juiced up in just 23 minutes. It also supports 50W wireless and 10W reverse wireless charging, which is great.
But Motorola isn’t offering these accessories in India at the moment. So, if you want super-fast charging speed, go for the Edge 50 Pro, and if you want a long-lasting battery, the V40 is a great choice.
Vivo V40 vs Motorola Edge 50 Pro: Verdict
The Vivo V40 and the Motorola Edge 50 Pro are great all-rounders in the sub-Rs 40,000 price range. They impress in most areas, such as the display, performance, cameras, and more. So, choosing between the two can be tough.
If you want a camera-focused experience with an impressive battery, the V40 is the one. Also, if you don’t mind spending the extra bucks, it’s the one to pick. But if you have a strict budget, want a clean UI experience, and a phone that charges quickly, the Edge 50 Pro is the one to pick.
